Pickled onions will be fine as long as they haven't been opened. If they have been opened then the vinegar will start to go thick if they are turning.£36/£240

I've been up for hours and I've been baking things to use up my cupboard ingredients.
Millionaire shortbread to use up a tin of condensed milk and some cooking chocolate.
A lemon meringue pie using up meringue nests and a lemon pie filling mix. It doesn't look pretty with broken nests on top but it will taste nice I'm sure
Peanut butter cookies to use up some brown sugar.£36/£240

The weekend has turned into one full of pottering about and getting jobs done - yesterday was mostly spent out in the garden tidying up and building my raised bed kits for the veg patch (first time actually out in the garden since we bought the house!). So today is an indoors day trying to do a bit of deep cleaning and sorting the dreaded food cupboard.
Mixed seed flatbrads (bb 19/10/13 and opened) - rather stale so straight in the bin
7 assorted tins of soup
1 veetee dine in pilau rice
4 packets of chicken instant noodles
1 kg raisin, almond and honey granola
1 box of weetabix with a few left in the bottom
1/2 box rosemary crackers
1 packet harvest grain crackers
1 packet doriano crackers
1 tin ambrosia low fat custard
1 tin peach halves (bb sept 2012)
1 jar tikka paste
1 jar balti paste
1 jar spicy mango chutney
1/2 kg of long grain rice
1/2 kg couscous
1 chicken deli box noodles (bb dec 13)
1 jar peanut butter (half full)
2 x 4 packs of heinz beans snap pots
1 tub vanilla sugar
1/4 packet of thai rice
1 packet of morello cherry pie filling (bb dec 13)
1 bottle of pancake syrup
1 aero hot chocolate mix
1 x packet decaf tea bags
1 x packet of regular tea bags
1 x tub of loose tea from Sri Lanka
1 x box lasagne sheets
2 x packets of trottole tricolore pasta
1/2 packet of digestives
1/2 bag porridge oats
1 x bag tortilla crisps
2 x multi packs of sun bites
2 x cartons of cranberry juice
1 carton of white grape and peach juice
I have a separate cupboard with baking ingredients (assorted flours, sugars, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, chocolate, yeast and stuff for decorating cakes) and another that is for spices and seasoning (stock pots, soy sauce, oyster sauce, flavoured vinegars, mirin, etc). I wont list everything in those cupboards because I'd be here forever, but the following is the list of things way past bb dates and at the point where I felt a need to bin them:
garam masala
ground cumin
basil
paprika (2006!)
ground black pepper
thyme
garlic salt
cardamom pods
another paprika
mild chilli powder
mixed herbs
bouquet garni
Most of the above were duplicates from before my partner and I lived together...I think many were probably in the cupboard of his old flat since he moved out of his parent's house lol.
My cupboard looks much tidier nowCommon sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
Hi All,
I checked my cupboards before Christmas. I didn't make a list (but may do now) but removed and/or brought items with short use by/best before dates to the front. I have two things I'm loath to chuck out, but don't know what to do with. 1x small can of coconut milk (Waitrose Essential) - 4 months out of date.
Jar of sunblush(?) tomatoes - 6 months out of date.
Can I safely use these and how best to use them?
ThanksFree thinker.:cool:0 -
open & sniff
if the sunblush tomatoes are in oil, you'll be able to tell if it's spoiled by the smell - should think it would be ok though. Can be used to top pizzas or in stews or casseroles.
The coconut milk can be used up in milk jellies (particularly nice in lime flavoured) or rice pudding.0 -
I use loads of out of date cans, its handy living two doors from my mam and dad, dad doesn't do out of date anything, so i always gain something or other when i visit.!0

Coconut milk can also be used to make a filling for coconut cream pie....it's gorgeous!Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0
