We live in Greater Manchester and can use our bus passes on the train and metro as well as buses.

Once a week we have a day out using our passes. We visit museums, art galleries and wander round seeing things we have never noticed before. It is surprising what we have missed in the past when we had to do other things as well as work.

Roll on next April when we are supposed to be able to use our passes nationwide.

we usually visit the tourist office too. We went to Lacock yesterday. Absolutely lovely for a day out. Food is pretty expensive ie pasty from the bakers is £2.50 but was cooked on the premises and tasted lovely. We took our own drinks and had lunch in the car. We weren`t going to pay £12.50 each for a meal

Great idea re the passes. I`ll have mine in a few months so travelling by bus here we come.

I make the most of being a 'senior' ask at your local town hall in your nearest town .In the Medway there is a thing called Passport to Lesuire which gives lots of freebie entrance's and discounts .I am lucky in that a lot of venues in Kent, once you have bought the ticket for it they last a year i,e, Leeds Castle ,Cobtree Museum of Kent life ,Chatham Dockyard so you can visit as often as you like at no extra charge .I suppose its finding what you fancy .When my husband was alive we used to make a point of every Tuesday going out for the day somewhere different .We would make a day of it and if the weather was good we would take a picnic, and if a bit cold or wet we would treat ourselves to a pub lunch somewhere . or even the cinema . Our local Odeon at Chatham do a special £3.00. entrace plus a cuppa and a biscuit on a Tuesday morning for Seniors from 11.00.a.m. It was a great way of having something to focus on at least once a week Other wise you do tend to 'drift' a bit and week-ends are the same as week days. having been widowed for almost 4 years I am at college twice a week and go swimming two or three times a week .I try to make sure that I do something different every day and have the week-ends as days of 'rest'

Senior discount tickets from National express are good value if you fancy going somewhere for the day or weekend then it is well worth it.

Just before my DH retired 3 years ago someone gave me an addressbook so instead of writing addresses in it I used it to list places within driving distance of where we live. A was Aberdeen etc Z was the zebra crossing in our little town then a mystery tour. We listed all the tiny villages and towns within a few hours drive. Every Wednesday off we go and have found loads of great tearooms and places to eat. The book stays in the glove compartment of the car and we consult it to write in when we visited somewhere and favourite shops and places. We have worked our way through the alphabet a few times but haven't got bored yet and we both look forward to Wednesdays.
Also joined the local 50+ group - didn't feel old enough for the 60+ and have great theatre trips and organised holidays with them.

That's a really good idea grunnie, I keep hearing about places I want to go to, or want to take DH to, but then I forget ...
