My dh retired a couple of weeks ago and I want us to get into the habit of taking days out. We have NT membership but living in Wales, we have to travel a long way to get anywhere. We have managed to get to half a dozen places so far but will not be renewing next year
Any ideas will be welcome otherwise life may just drift

May be a bit too soon since retiring, but how about some voluntary groups? No need to volunteer but often they have groups that may be of interest
For instance at my local Age Concern I run a group on Family History
There are also groups on IT which maybe he or you or both could help with
Or how about U3A? Many local groups, for instance I am off this afternoon to my ones photo group where we are planning for our next show in the local library. I know our U3A does walks, talks, visit shows, archeology [sp?] and many more. Too many for me to find time to do them allGardener’s pest is chef’s escargot0 -
Thanks farway I appreciate your post but we don`t need ideas to fill our time. I was looking for pleasurable days out like `pub lunch and pictures` or `visit to a ???` as a couple on our own
makes me sound `strange` but we already do a fair bit of group things and we live in a community, where people talk to each other0 -
I would have thought there were lots of places to go in Wales, which part do you live in?
Do you have a local cinema? A film and a meal once a week, might be something you enjoy? Not all outings need to cost money. A trip to the library once a week to choose a book. A trip to the park for a picnic, weather permitting of course.

Is there a Welsh organisation for castles, the equivalent of English Heritage?
Also there's a book published annually with garden open days in, if that would interest you.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
We discovered a website with around 100 walks on it - mainly in and around villages that we know, but all the walks took us to parts of the villages/towns that we had never discovered before. This was for the Peak District, but there may be ones for where you live too. Perhaps a day out per month discovering nearby places as if you were a tourist? We have started doing this in our nearest large city and have discovered gallery's etc that we have walked past loadsof times, but never been in. What about photography? Or any new hobby.0

We've got a book called Pub walks for Motorists which covers Beds, Bucks, Herts which involve a circular walk starting and finishing at a pub, where we end up having a meal at the end of the walk.

When in a strange town, I visit the tourist office and usually find a heap of brochures advertising things I never dreamed of doing and pick up a free map."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

What kind of events happen around your way? Live music, sport, festivals, theatre, concerts? Local paper should have lists of upcoming stuff.
If you like pubs, some historic ones are worth a trip on their own, and there are quite a lot these days which cater to "retired foodies".;)Trying to keep it simple...0 -
Since getting my bus pass recently I have been experimenting with where I can go with it. Sadly living in a rural area there aren't many buses and those there are are usually only 2 per day but I am sure you could manage a day out with your bus pass.
So far I've been to Plymouth (1 1/2 hr), Exeter (2hrs) and Barnstaple (2 hrs), to get to Truro would mean 4 buses and 4 hours so I am leaving that one for the moment.0
