Depends on the firmware in the phone already. If you have stock firmware you can update to the Nokia release, if the firmware you have has already been modified by O2 you'll have to wait until O2 approves and releases it, or reflash the phone to stock firmware and potentially void the warranty.

I know re-flashing a phone back to the original makers firmware should not affect a warranty, but from personal experience I can tell you that the networks will consider it a reason to void your warranty with them.
  • ok thanks for that

I got the impression that Nokia sent the update out to phones and therefore did not involve the networks.

Suppose i will just have to wait

    Yes and no.

If you bought it SIM free so it has Nokia's stock firmware on you'll most likely get it over the network from Nokia, getting it ovr the network is a misnomer, it will get it via the internet and WiFi/3G from Nokia's servers

If your phone has network branded firmware (say it has the O2 logo on startup, or O2 features) they you need to wait until when (and if) O2 rebrand the update and approve release it to your phone. It may still come from Nokia, but needs the O2 seal of approval. While O2 should be releasing the update, if it's an older phone they may choose to not brand the update, so it may never be available for you. This is less common these days with smartphones but has happened in the past.

Generally speaking network branded phones will only update to a new network branded virsion of the firmware. To go to another network brand, or a non branded version will involve more work and a risk of bricking the phone if you don't know what to do.

Mine came through this morning - currently on holiday in Helsinki so whether that has anything to do with it?

Edit: It's the version ending 1002 which is apparently the Three UK or "Country Variant". Must be stock software on it.

    That is[/s] surprising...

    But yes, updates go:

    Microsoft > Nokia > Carrier > Phone

If your phone was bought sim free, it misses out the carrier section. I have a Tesco sim in my 920 but no update yet (bought mine sim free).
I wonder if I change the locality to Helsinki then it will come through like the trick with the store a few months ago.

However mine (according to Nokia) says:
    Lumia 920 / Country variant / Available

    yet phone says no!

It unfortunately doesn't work. Changing the locality will change your app store (good for apps) but does not change your firmware version. You can, however, get Microsoft's half of the update now directly from Microsoft with ease and no impact on your warranty. It involves setting up a developer account (free) but IMO is worth it.

Both Vodafone and O2 have pushed out the update already. I think Three is either available or about to be available.
