I stick it in a wallet, shove it in the holiday cupboard and re-use it next year.

If I'm not going back to the same currency zone I sell it to a friend who is.

That's what I do. I use Euros, Dollars and Thai Baht almost every year so it's not worth changing them back. Just keep them in a drawer with your passport and forget about them. When it is time to travel you have a ready supply of beer money. If you are lucky then the exchange rate will have moved in your favour and the money will be worth more than it did last year.

For anything else, I try to spend as much as possible before leaving (airport bar, duty free shop)

I've used them to buy currency with no problems - other than being in when it's delivered.

I would imagine they are just as reliable in reverse - it's the same companies. Remember to factor in special delivery postage with (probably) extra insurance into the calculation. And look at their ID requirements - you might need to send a copy of your passport for example

Or if I'm on one of my occasional day trips to London (where most of them are) I'll do it then

You often get better rates in-country for changing money back as you can round up/down with coins and accept several currencies to get the best round value. For instance I bought a load of Dinars with GBP, but changing back would either get me £10 plus keeping a load of Dinars for the overpriced airport, or a €20 note and pennies to spare. Used the € for tea and a sandwich on the plane home as the exchange rate was rounded to actually be quite favourable!

its surprising how much you get back

people on there are paying over the odds for notes a quick search i found people paying £20 for €20 and postage on top of that when they can easily get a much better deal at the post office or travel bureau
  • The best rates are to be found at the London based companies. Most of the companies near the top of martin lewis's travelmoneymax have several high street branches in London, such as Thomas Exchange, so they are not merely internet based companies that you are posting your money to.

Even though you will be paying extra for the Royal Mail Special delivery, you will still be getting a much better deal than your local Post Office, M&S or bureau de change.

There are some incredibly stupid buyers on ebay. Someone was successfully selling EUR20 notes for £23 :rotfl:

They are not stupid they are laundering money which they cannot extract from paypal. Or they are scamming the sellers.
