Been screwed over by employees, theft, reporting to authorities for misdemeanours that never happened but it's a load of hassle when you go through an investigation, scamming the overtime which is theft really, using company vehicles to wander off route to get cheaper baccy in Belgium than France etc etc etc. But I don't look at all employees the same way.
Don't mean to be grumpy, but honestly the way some people speak about employers ( and that's a general some people, not specifically anyone on this thread), you'd think we were the devil incarnate, it makes you wonder why you bother.0 -

It used to be the amount that was 'safe' in a banking group under the government scheme. So, you needed to check you only had that much in accounts within the same GROUP (not bank brand name....)

That 50k is now 85 k. So you can have that amount within the same GROUP. Its important to make sure particularly for say, downsizers, that any significant cash amount is spread not across banking groups. This isn't always obvious. E.g. Lloyds is also same group as halifax, Bank of Scotland and Scottish Widows. So a bank acc with halifax and lloyds is not safe protection, you want ones in different groups.0 -
Hi all, hope everyone is keeping safe and dry in these storms. It's howling a right old gale here.
I do online banking, being for the most part housebound it's a lifeline for me. I don't worry about it even though I did have my bank account emptied once, not a great amount as never keep that much in current account but bank was really good and efficient, they put the money back in my account within a week. They said it was very unlikely to be anything to do with banking online but one of the few times I might have used a card in a shop or machine etc as that is where cards are mostly cloned. I like soup, and make jugs of it for my solo days, its one of the things I resent when NOT flying solo, that resident parent will not eat soup without bread or accompaniment) and will to eat the same meal two days in a row, E.g. In summer I like to make a jug of gazpacho on Monday and just pour a lass till the jug is gone and live like that between socialising and weekends. In winter I'd do it with veg soup. My general thinking along £10-£15k lines is to do with £10,000 and £16,000 respectively being savings limits for people on certain sort of benefits on the one hand OR Pension Credit on the other hand. It was an arbitrary figure. The £85 000 is the current guarantee level. At the moment if there were a bail-in the banks would probably take 40% of whatever is in the account above £85 000. They might actually decide to spread the burden out a bit more and have a new guarantee of only £70 000 (again arbitrary) it could be more or less. There may not be enough money above £85000 to raid so they might lower the level. It all depends on if some customers will be protected ie councils or hospitals.
Though out banks have lent more than 9 times the GDP. So if there was a bail-in, the government will probably have to lower the level of guaranteed deposits in order to avoid yet another bailout by the taxpayers. As you said £16 000 could be a valid level but if they had it as low as that they might end up with serious public unrest. £50000 could still be problematic for them to get to. It could be lowered just a few thousand pounds hoping to skim 40% of whatever funds are above that level. The lower you are below that level in what ever account you have would reduce the risks of the banks skimming a big slice of it.
Don't forget that if and when they do this, there will be a bank holiday so you cannot access your accounts to move money out.It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

I've got to get a new bed for the other room before my dad comes to stay in March. I'm wondering though about getting myself a single bed and putting my double in that room. Mrs Bones - I don't have a single bed. I love the fact I can spread out across my lovely double bed.Definitely a plus point in my eyes. I agree that they can be a pita to change though. You would like someone would have invented an easier way by now wouldn't you :rotfl:
Online banking - I use it and love it for the fact I can do things I want when I want and see instant results. In fact on the odd occasion I get a cheque to bank, I find it inconvenient having to go to the bank to pay it in. That's about the only time I go to a branch these days.
The only problem I've ever had wasn't really online banking itself. I had some fraud on a debit card about 5 years ago but because I had online banking I discovered it straight away and it was sorted v quickly and easily. Never had any problems since.0 -

After thought we opted to I've resident parent a single.
Its easier to make, a crucial consideration for parent ( aging) and me ( struggling). We have a I've foot bed and I'm embarrassed to say I cannot always manage the strength to make it alone these days. That extra sight of modern thick mattresses, and width can be significant.
We actually had an old Italian bed frame which is just wider than single so had yo have a mattress made ( not. A great saving) but it does give more room in the room, and halves impact of washing...almost...there is still a double duvet on it.0 -

I am single but have a double bed. You never know.
Though a second double would also mean that you would be able to have additional guests over. The fact is that you will effectively be able to use some bedding on either bed. If you have the space go for a double.It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0
