Shaw Trust - any good?

Hi

I've been unemployed for 6 years and I've been looking for a job for the past year.

I've been looking at The Shaw Trust website and it says they help you find work (the Jobcentre are useless).

http://www.shaw-trust.org.uk/

Before I ask my Jobcentre to refer me I was wondering if anyone else has any experience of The Shaw Trust? Are they any good at helping people into decent employment?

I asked to be referred to them, the lady I saw was lovely but she told me straight out, they should not have referred me as they are only allowed to offer help to those 24 and under, by order of the government, so if you are in that age range, go for it, I guess even if you are over that age, give it a try as the rules change all the time and to her credit I asked her to break the rules and ring one of the contacts I knew they had, she did it but they too have been told only to help the under 24s so I was left with no help at all, even tho I was with the disability officer at the jobcentre, which also turned out to be useless.

Try it, you have nothing to loose.

^ I'm 32. I didn't see anything on their website about under 24s. I did hear they're like the old New Deal scheme (and I know that was for under 24s).

Is it a Work Program though? Because that's why I want to make sure they're good first - because if I ask for a referral and they're a waste of time I'm still stuck with them or I lose my JSA

If its the WP you are going on they can not get you a job.

I think if the jobcentre refers you, then they have to work under their rules, if they say to only target the help to under 24s then that is what they have to do.

Maybe you can contact them yourself directly, then the under 24 rule may not apply?

As said rules change all the time, so it might be open to older people now?

As far as is it a work programe? I can only go by what the woman I saw told me, she said it was not a work programe I could stop going if I didn't feel it was helping at any time, it did sound very good, until she asked my age, then it all fell apart :rotfl:

:rotfl: as said it was only one appointment, she was 30 minutes late and looked like she had just been on a CND march, so I wasn't holding out much hope but she did talk a good talk..oh and kept telling me their help was very very expensive, at least she got that part right as I got zero help but she would have been paid for the referral.
