A TIA should automatically mean you are barred from driving for 6 months. Sorry for the bad news, but I should tell it like it is! Take care as you are at increased risk of a stroke for at least the next week or two (a serious reason to stop driving).

There is lots more information about TIA and stroke available from both the Stroke Association and http://www.differentstrokes.co.uk/

Update - oops, things have obviously changed recently. Apologies - link above looks authoritative.

'Responsibility for determining the standards, including medical requirements, to be applied to taxi drivers, over and above the driver licensing requirements, rests with the Transport for London in the Metropolitan area and the Local Authority in all others areas. Current best practice advice is contained in the booklet ‘Fitness to Drive’: A Guide for Health Professionals published on behalf of the Department by The Royal Society of Medicine Press Limited (RSM) in 2006. This recommended that the Group 2 medical standards applied by DVLA in relation to bus and lorry drivers, should also be applied by local authorities to taxi drivers.' Group 2 ban is worse than my original advice = 'Licence refused or revoked for 1 year following a stroke or TIA.' :(
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

I had a stoke back in august and I was only blocked from driving for a month which is statutory but depends how serious the stroke was, you don't have to inform the dvla either but I did inform my insurance company.
  • Not as bad as first thought. Thanks for the advice everyone
