Suffered a mini stroke TIA

Hi all I may have suffered a mini stroke.I will know tomorrow after I have some more tests.Being a taxi driver this could result in my licence being revoked for a time possibly around one year.I am now very worried that I wont be able to pay my bills council taxi etc.Is it possible to get CC companies to suspend payments for a time to help as otherwise we are up s**T creek without a paddle

Generally most companies will give you some leeway, as long as you're upfront. The bigger issues and heals dug in come when there are missed payments, unopened letters etc.

Once you have the results, then you'll be able to take stock and see what's what :)
  • After going through BR and got our life back this is all we need
  • Sorry to hear you are not well mrtaximan, I hope it is better news from the hospital. If you find you are going to struggle with credit commitments because you lose your driving licence can I suggest you contact Stepchange who should be able to help you perhaps write to your creditors and get some reduced payments.

I second what the other poster said, don't ignore things or letters and do your best to still pay the minimum payment until you have sought some help.
  • If you are unable to work, you may be entitled to some benefits. Once you know more about your health situation and the implications for your work, I suggest a visit to your local Citizens Advice Bureau.

Presumably being self employed as a cab driver, the trade off is there are less benefits to be had ?

Self employment usually rules out contribution-based benefits, but he will be entitled to the same means-tested benefits as anyone else is if his household income is low enough (ESA, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support are the most likely).

The other point to make is that rent/mortgage, council tax, bills etc are priorities and need to be paid first. If there is little or no money left over for credit card repayments, then that is where the shortfall should end up. Call StepChange as Twisted Cherry suggested as soon as it is clear that you are struggling.

DVLA do not suspend your licence for a TIA but you are not allowed to drive for 1 month , to ensure it may be a one off or if more occur. You do not need to inform them unless you have more than 1 or if you have a full stroke that leaves you with issues after a month

I may be wrong but l do believe it's the taxi drivers licence plate with the council etc that gets suspended and a medical will be required before getting plate back.

Self employment does not bar you from claiming contribution based benefits if you are unable to work because of illness. Please check the gov.uk website to see exactly what you are/are not entitled to.
