Decided on a car, now where to find one?

Hi all

I have been doing my research on here and have decided that the car thats suits our needs best is a Hyundai i30 or a Kia cee'd. I have test driven both and wouldn't mind which I bought.

I have a budget of £5-6k (don't mind going to 6 at all). Problem is now I've done all this, I can't seem to find any in my price range.

Can anyone advise the best places to look, dealers seem a lot pricer that I was expecting - 2011 i30 for £7.8k for e.g. I have searched honest john and autotrader but can't find any within 30 miles of me. Ideally I don't want to wait more that a couple of weeks.

Alternatively, the dealer one I drove I liked a lot. Can anyone confirm that my feel that it is overpriced? I would pay perhaps £6.5k for it but is that too big a drop. It is a comfort i30, 25k miles

Cars, like other things, are only worth what someone else is willing top pay for it.

However, prices are also goverened by supply & demand, and if the car you are looking for is not available anywhere else in almost 3000 square miles of your location, then it sounds quite rare and the asking price will no doubt reflect this.
  • I think there must have been a glitch in the system. Now I look and there are 103! Now I just need to sum up the courage to buy from a dealer as I only know horror stories

Hi Patricia. I wouldn't worry if your buying from a dealer, as they have a lot of consumer laws to abide too. But would recomend that you pay say a £200 deposit by credit card as this also gives you section 75 cover if things go really badly. Good luck with your new car
  • So even if I put just the deposit on CC I'm covered? I plan to pay the rest on debit card. I have seen a nice looking i30 on budget, so may go take a look at the service history etc this week.

Another question - how do I check whether the 5 year warranty will still be valid, what do I need to see on the service history?

As long as the service history is all upto date then the manufactorors warranty should still be in place. That is as long as it's Hyundai serviced.
I would ring the last garage that serviced it to check it's all up to date.
I believe that by paying your deposit by credit card under section 75 makes the credit card company jointly responsible if the worst happens with the car purchase. Hope it all goes well for you

The service history, from memory, will need to have been done within 1k or one month of it's due date by a vat registered garage and the book stamped. My Hyundai book says it's the only record to prove service (don't seem to have caught up with electronic service books yet?). When I bought my i30 (good car btw, no problems in 3 years and 25k, if not the most exciting car ever...) I called Hyundai customer services to confirm the warranty status too.

I believe citykid5 is correct that as long as you pay at least £100 on the credit card, you'll get section 75 protection. I do this for all my big purchases!

Edit to add - doesn't actually require Hyundai dealer service, but comparable parts need to have been used and the correct service items replaced and correct oil spec used at the specified intervals to avoid any warranty issues

A 2011 KIA or Hyundai should still have the balance of the manufacturer's warranty to run (7 and 5 years respectively) so should be a safe bet as long as the service history is up-to-date.

But good luck convincing Hyundai on the minute detail of that point when a warranty issue arises.

Hi Patricia. Sorry about the delay in replying to your post. I would go for the red one out of the 3 cars too. Try to avoid metallic silver as they generally have poorer resale values. Also the ad says service history?
I would give them a call to see if it's full main dealer? As most traders would have mentioned this in their ad? Also google the dealers name with the phrase reviews after it to see what comes up.
    Best of luck citykid
