What does second fix include?

  • Then why didn't he explain at the outset that he expected someone else to do the *installing*?

DH's friend runs an award-winning bathroom showroom that supplies and fits (if required) and his fitting staff are know as *bathroom fitters* or *installers* which I guess is different from a (pardon the pun ;)) bog-standard plumber fixing broken taps/loos etc.

Otoh, most people refer to the guy that fits their bathroom by the generic term *plumber* and would expect that having employed said *plumber* to work on a new bathroom, they would be doing the whole lot, which brings me back to my original query - why did he not make his intentions clear from the beginning instead of leading you up the garden path? Could be cross purposes, but seems more like him trying to shaft you imho.......

To me a bathroom fitter (installer) is a semi-skilled plumber...if thats all he can do..

    Good news!!
He came and suggested that it would be upto another £800 for the "installation" on top of the 1st fix and second fix price.

I suggested we had "taken advice" from various sources (which we have) and this wasn't reasonable. A little blustering later and he backed down.

I imagine a trying to get a few hundred extra pounds out of a job against risking your reputation as a business just isn't worth it but it would have been so easy not to mention it and pay the money so I wonder who else may have been told this by him.

Anyway, I am pleased it is sorted, they are doing a good job and I hope this continues.

Thanks All for your input and support. It was a big help :j:j:j

I utterly disagree - surely someone that installs sanitary ware and connects the plumbing (as these *bathroom fitters/installers* do) has to be more highly skilled than one that merely does plumbing (fixing leaks, mending loos etc)?

This is the best news we could have hoped for. Please keep an eye on him and please keep a retention as I suggested. If there is a problem and he isn't owed anything, he sounds like the sort of person that wouldn't come back at a later date and you'll end up paying someone else to do what he should be doing. Worse, he deliberately omits something with the same result.

I'm outraged at his prices. I still can't fathom the difference between plumbing a piece of sanitaryware and fitting it yet we've got people arguing about which is the better skill to have. Baffling.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • An update: the job is all done and after sorting a few issues we are pleased with the end product. Invoice arrives in the post with an extra £500 above the amount agreed - perhaps we weren't supposed to notice!! Again had a conversation and he was apologetic and the amount was taken off. Can't say he's not a tryer!!

Anyway very pleased it is finished!
  • Thanks for the update - good to know you're happy with the end result and that you didn't end up paying the *extra* amount ;)

There are plenty of "bog standard " bathroom fitters phoebe.

The majority of bathroom fitters do just fit bidets, showers, loos and a bit of tiling etc whereas a many plumbers will kit out a whole house including water purification etc. From my personal experience a good qualified plumber is worth his/her weight in gold whereas a "bathroom installer" needs no qualifications.

The term "Bathroom installers" is a glitzy term to be honest and a bit like a "multi skilled tradesman".

I'm not a plumber btw I'm a Carpenter & Joiner so I have no vested interest.
  • Point taken leveller and I bow to your greater knowledge and experience ;)

However, we have a great plumber - when he can be bothered to show up - that has worked extensively on our (non-listed) Georgian thatched house. He knows all there is to know about general plumbing and heating systems (ours is oil).......but he wouldn't know one end of our Hansgrohe Axor Montreux shower from another and having previously relied on old-school *plumbers* with our bathroom fitting with disastrous results, I wouldn't trust him within an inch of it.......for that we called in a very talented bathroom installer ;):p

What is an 'old school plumber'?
