Still confused about Internet Traffic Shaping and Traffic Management by ISP's

Hello

Looking to perhaps switch my broadband from Sky to PlusNet soon.

However I notice PlusNet operates Traffic Shaping. How would this effect me? I will be streaming content online on a heavy basis as well as online gaming.

Some advise online seem to conflict. Some say streaming is slowed some say its given priority.

Could anyone kindly explain (to a technically inept person) how this will effect the service that PlusNet provide. I notice Sky doesnt Traffic Manage whatsoever.

VOIP and gaming are prioritised. Streaming and surfing come in the middle. P2P (torrents etc) and NNTP (newsgroups) get lowest priority.

If you choose the Essentials they don't fare quite so well as the Unlimited products.

Why are you looking to move? If it's to get the cheap £2.50 essentials then that may not perform as well as Sky as it runs as a lower priority service than the higher priced ones and will be first to suffer at peak times if there is insufficient capacity.

As that's an unlimited product I think you'd be fine. I have Plusnet unlimited fibre and don't see any contention at all. I don't use NNTP or torrents though and they may run slower than with some others so if that is any concern see what others have to say.

If you move don't forget to check TopCashBack and Quidco. When I moved there was a £100 Quidco exclusive and TCB were ~ £40 but these things change around all the time.

    Thanks for that.

My broadband is copper (no fibre in my area).

Noticed TCB has £105 back until tomorrow.

What is content from Peer to Peer and Usenet?

If you have to ask, you probably won't be using them. :D
Peer to peer is using something like BitTorrent to download movies or TV series, and Usenet is a similar network but operated differently (in essence).

I won't be downloading, as I understand it. Being specific I will be streaming content from XBMC
