Check the eBay listing fees carefully. eBay is a very expensive way to sell a cheap car, and you have the possible problem of non-paying bidders.

And if you accept Paypal (eBay make it hard for you not to do this) you will take a further hit.

I sold a motorbike a few years ago through eBay and got what I thought was a good price, but by the time eBay and Paypal had taken their cut, I was left with a lot less than I had hoped for. If you go for eBay, insist on 'cash on collection' only.

(I had asked for a £100 deposit via Paypal and the rest in cash, but the buyer paid the whole lot, 4 grand, immediately by Paypal. As he was 400 miles away and was sending a courier for the bike, I thought it better to have the money and not make problems, but it did sting a bit. I think I would do it differently now.)
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
  • Ebay don't enforce the 'must accept PayPal' rule on vehicle selling last time I looked.

Also If I'm selling anything that is collection only, then I write in description that it is cash only and any PayPal payments will be refunded.

Too risky taking PayPal when you won't have proof of postage.

Eaby don't 'enforce' it as such. I said they make it hard not to choose it. Paypal used to be just one of the payment options, then it became the default option, and I seem to remember the last time I sold something quite valuable it was very hard to find a way for Paypal not to be one of the options.

For large items, I tend to ask for an immediate deposit via Paypal to seal the deal (or cover my costs if the bidder doesn't follow through) and cash on delivery/collection for the balance. Small items, I specify Paypal and take the hit as it is admittedly very convenient.

Where about in the country are you? I know someone who is in the market for a car like that right now :)

(Yes I know that sounds like a scam response to a gumtree ad, but this is a friend with a baby on the way)

When I say enforce, I mean they make you list PayPal as one of the options for payment. You then can't stop someone paying you by PayPal when it is listed as one of your accepted payment methods.

Ebay don't enforce the rule of listing PayPal as a payment method on vehicle selling.

    Spam?

I've just had a look and there are 40 cars within a 50 mile radius of my postcode, but the latest submission was in December and the Rest from November.

I bet most of these cars are long gone now.
