tips while working

I've worked for hotels and bars and some places you keep your own tips and other places you pool it. But on the receiving end, I've given tips and if I think I've had exceptional service I've asked the waitress/waiter whether or not the money will go to them before I've tipped over and beyond the usual.
It's the nature of the industry and to be fair if your daughter has done a wee one night shift then I think having a huge to do over a couple pound tip is ridiculous.0 -
            hi macca,
it's not just a one night shift though she is going back next week and it could turn into a little job to see her through collage. Also it is the principle of it. She worked her butt off and was given a nice tip of £6.30 from one customer which to a 16 year old is a lot of money and it has been taken from her. she earned it not the employer if the customer wanted it to go to the employer he would not have said to her this is for you.

            hi paddedjohn,
For the employee they are but do u honestly think if an employer is talking their tips that the employer is going to declare them to the tax. some probably do but I bet they all don't. It's free money for the employer no paper trail. unless u pay by card and pay the 10% service charge

But it is one wee shift. Believe it or not she's on trial, if she goes into work kicking up a fuss over a 6.30 tip she's not gonna be going back and if you or her decides that a place that pools tips isn't for her then she can go apply elsewhere. She's 16, there's a host of other 16 year olds to take her place. It's harsh but it's reality0 -
            Hi macca,
Have u read all the posts I have put up. 1 she is not my daughter she is my friends daughter. 2 I have never said she was going to kick up a fuss I came here looking for advice for her. My friend is going to speak to the employer and ask what their policy is on tips. 3 she has no problem with pooling the tips which is why she handed them in in the first place. 4 it was a lot more than £6.30 that was what one customer gave her. Both girls handed in all their tips so for all we know it could have been £20 or it could have been a lot more.

Lynda sorry, I'm not trying to be difficult. Sometimes the written word comes across harsher than it means to be. But I'll reiterate my point. She's 16.there's a hundred other 16 year olds who can do the job too. Unless she wants a big battle with the company in undoing their tips policy then I'm not sure what else to do0

            hi macca,
I know what you mean and I am sorry if I am coming across nasty. Thats the problem we don't know what there policy is. She was so shocked when she handed in the money and was told u don't get tips she just walked away. She should have asked what happened to the tips.
What I am also trying to get across is me as a customer I would not be chuffed if I gave some one whether they are a taxi driver, waiter, bar person, delivery person, chambermaid, any one in the hospitality industry a cash tip for a good service and it was taken off them and they were told u don't get tips. I have no problem with people pooling their tips because there is more than just a waiter when u are in a restaurant what about the poor chef who cooked my meal or the dish washer they deserves just as much as the waiter but I never think to tip the chef or the dish washer. So well done to all the people who do Poole their tips.

That's why in an earlier post I mentioned that I'll quite often ask the waitress what the tip situation is when I want the tip to go to the waitress0

            hi macca
yes I will be doing the same from now on. I makes me angry that things like that go on because let's face it hospitality isn't the easiest job. People usually work long and unsociable hours and most probably do it for NMW. Then they have to deal with awkward customers as well as the nice ones.
I suppose it's a hard lesson to learn for a 16 year old. No doubt she will have worse knock backs than losing some money on her road to adulthood.
