Mrs Trelfa's Master Plan For Trifle Towers

  • Hi all,

Apologies for neglecting this diary, we had a death in the family. It's amazing how things can change in a couple of months.

So the Trelfa twist has not been performed since the start of April as although my mum has had her farm on the market for the last couple of years, the market is still bad down where she is, and it's not sold. As she has been struggling to make ends meet we have been giving her our overpayments each month. She will be giving it back out of the cash proceeds and we will overpay then. I know we won't be saving as much as if we had made the overpayments earlier but we figured that helping our family was more important.

So on to some happier news. Our holiday to Thailand has been booked for October which we have been able to get a great deal on.

Hope you all are well and the overpayments are going well. Apologies once again for neglecting you all.

  • Sorry to hear about your sad news.

On the overpayment front, my view is to pay what you can when times are good, but not beat yourself up when the money is needed elsewhere. With standard payments you are still paying down the mortgage (albeit much more slowly), and you can reinstate overpayments whenever things change for the better. Many people are not in the position to make 400 quid payments each month and need to save up for overpayments. Perhaps a small challenge such as saving all your £2 coins would save something over a few months that you then could overpay with, and maybe it will make you feel like you are not just treading water. Im sure we would all like to hear about the Trelfa twist again :dance:

Hopefully your holiday will hope to take your mind off things.
    Im very jealous.

  • Hi Rachel, I was just thinking about you the other day, I haven't been on here much and was thinking I might have missed you! Very sorry to hear about your bereavement, I hope you are all coping ok. I think giving your mum the OPs is a lovely thing to do, I'm glad you are close to family and can help each other out in good times and bad. Time will come when you can reinstate the OPs and get back to Trelfa Twisting again

  • I'm back :)

Hey all, sorry for not posting for a while, things have been a bit up and down.

So some good news is that my mum finally moved at the end of January and she is now mortgage free. The money that she has borrowed from us we told her to hang on to as she has bought a bit of a project (it was a repossessed house so she got a good deal) and I said it can be her emergency fund in case things go over budget. So she is going to pay us back after all work is done. However it means that the overpayments are back in action and the hubby made one at the beginning of this month (although failed to do the Trelfa twist). Just waiting for the document from the bank telling us our new mortgage free date.

Our holiday to Thailand was incredible and we have booked to go to Sri Lanka for our wedding anniversary in May.

The bad news is that my car is unfortunately going to car heaven and I need to replace it asap - an unfortunate cost but one I have been saving for so some good old haggling will be in order.

    Hope you all akeeping well.

  • Whoop whoop, just performed the Trelfa twist in my living room as the paper work showing the revised term and we have already knocked 18 months off the term since we started overpaying and that's with the break helping my mum out. Very impressed even if I say so myself.

  • Hi Rachel, good to see you again, I've thought of you on & off & wondered how you were doing :)

Well done on the term reduction, that's brilliant :T. Good luck car hunting & haggling :money:

Here's to more Trelfa Twisting :D

  • Welcome back!!

18 months is impressive in such a short time given the break in overpayments, you must be well chuffed. :T

  • Thank you all. We really feel that this year will be a fresh start and a big break through on the overpayments. The best of it is that its pay day next week and so there will be another visit to the bank :)

  • So hubby and I went to the bank today and that's another£400 overpayment followed by the Trelfa twist and even the hubby had a little boogie. we worked out that with this and the normal monthly payment that is due next week we will be under £100,000. It will only just be u
under but it's a good psychological mile stone and the hubby seems more on board seeing that we have gone from borrowing £104,000 to now owing under £100,000 in a year and a half.

So last weekend I haggled my way to effectively a brand new car (14 plate with only 50 test drive miles). With my haggling and then the expert aka my mum we knocked him right down. He put up a great effort lol. I'm picking up the car tomorrow after the hubby goes go karting (a Christmas present) in the morning as its not far from the garage.

Hope you all are having a good weekend?
