Thanks iAMaLONDENER! I'm going to have a look into this and see what works out best for me. I also need to consider that if I do get the Amex card and start using this for everything that my Barclaycard may go unused and I may end up with a reduced limit or closure, which I guess isn't the end of the world its just handy as its 6.9% for life on purchases and BT's so I never know when it may come in use. I guess if there are places that don't accept Amex I can use the BC?

^yep, and if you live in a small town get used to it... my local co-op don't even accept Amex (well all their "we accept" credit card symbols don't have it) and I know for a fact most of our independents won't, half don't even take any cards lol.
    Oh, you wee bazza!

Both my local Co-ops don't have the Amex logo up but do accept it (Not via contactless though). A couple of local restaurants also don't have the logo up either but accept it fine (Although one does have Amex branded bill things that you always see in the USA , so that does the job). I don't really have any issues with any shops around me, they all accept Amex other than my dog groomer (Who doesn't really like taking credit cards at all, only debit). This is in Norwich though.

OK - I'll try the Amex next time. Main reason I didn't just stick the card in the machine this time is I had folk behind me, and I would have looked a right bell end putting an Amex in the machine and it being refused... so I just thought fk it and put my Visa in :rotfl:

EDIT: didn't know it had contactless. I see no contactless "wave" logo, didn't read about it being contactless in the documentation and the chip looks like none of my contactless cards.

I think the Green card and the nectar cards are the only two cards that are not issued with contactless (This could have changed though). Amex put the contactless logo next to the signature stripe on their own cards. (Lloyds bank and MBNA still put it on the front on their Amex cards).

Go to http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/tickets/Using_contactless_payment_cards_on_buses.pdf and scroll down to the bottom to see where it should be.

That's good to know RE Co-op as I have one where I live and use it quite frequently. I also didn't know the card is contactless. Here's hoping it'll be approved!

definitely no contactless logo. I don't mind though, never had need to use contactless around here, most places don't have it.

I wonder if Amex will eventually go the way of Visa/MasterCard and have everyone and their dog issuing cards. It's a clever way of spreading the brand and promoting acceptance (effectively outsourcing it) while concentrating efforts like customer services on their self issued cards and keeping them a "premium" brand. I can't imagine a barclaycard Amex (if they ever decide to issue them) being subject to better customer services than their usual foreign call centres.

It's a bit of a dilemma for me. My local co-op staff are friendly and some of them I talk to when I'm at the checkout. It'd be a shame if their machines didn't accept Amex though as I'd naturally be drawn to the other supermarket (which does take it) most of the time. This is why I think being picky about acceptance is a bad thing - the impact it can have is larger than some may think as it's very easy to just vote with your feet. If it turns out their machines don't take Amex, they'll be losing approx ~£200 a month every month from me - which would more than likely pay for each txn fee... :wall:

If they don't be sure to report to Amex's merchant team at https://www152.americanexpress.com/eforms/un/en_GB/eformsPage.do?face=en_GB&prod=Rapid&todo=view&appsrc=IFM and the merchant team will do their best to get them to accept the card.
