Maybe you could try a 'System Restore'. If you're lucky you might be able to go back to a Restore Point BEFORE you picked up what I assume could be a bit of malware.

Hi gyro I downloaded that programme you suggested yesterday but it didn t seem to work as in open up for me to see any results. I tried f8 and tried for a system restore but the only option it gave me was the day before. I hadn t used this laptop before then for, ages. I d just like to restore it to factory settings as there s nothing on it that I need to save. I don't know the option for that though.

It was delivered to me and I bought it years ago when I was first starting out. The booklet says Fortune. Technology ltd. on the lid it just says NOTEBOOK .On the back it says Notebook. Computer. model M35W, product code M375S, serial number NKM375S05101531.

I wouldn t mind just restoring it to factory settings but it's not f8.
    Thanks.

Looks like a Clevo based machine. Drivers to be found here

    Manual here

Does it have a Microsoft COA sticker attached?

I presume you don't have any of the original CD's that came with it from new then - or a WinXp disk. Is it XP or XP Pro. If you have the original Windows key on a sticker on the bottom, maybe you could ask your friends/family if anyone has a pure Windows XP disk of the same flavour that you could borrow to do a reinstall, but use your original key number? The only Lucky Technology site I could find was in Bombay, but it gave the impression of being more of a corner shop with ASPIRATIONS! - and didn't look very active.

Frankly a 7 year old lappy it may be better to wipe and install a basic Linux build. XP drops permanently out of support in 3 months time
Whilst I agree with the sentiment, and am indeed typing this on a 7 year old Dell running Ubuntu 12.04 which is very nice and zippy, I suspect that it's a bit beyond the scope of the OP!

Sounds like you've got everything you need to do a complete reinstall from scratch then emerald. There should be a section in the manual telling you exactly how to do it. Then you'll just have to run Windows Update to catch up with everything from 2002.

I can't remember how good the XP firewall is so you might also consider installing a good free firewall like the one from COMODO (ignoring the anti-virus part of it) and a free antivirus of your choice. I use Avast and have had no problems with it, though others have reported issues with the last update. You could try AVG or maybe Avira. Your comp manufacturer may include Norton with your install but that used to be quite a severe memory hog so if you've only got a small RAM you might give Norton a miss.

Linux Mint 14 loads and runs itself and is very user friendly with a good GUI and very little command line work needed.
