Where to go at Christmas

I fancy taking Mrs Knipfler and 12yo Master Knipfler away for a couple of weeks at Christmas. I've never been away at Christmas before. Has anybody got any tips where to go and who to book with? I don't know whether to book now or just get a late deal (if they exist at Christmas?)

Demand is high, and packages often add on the compulsory Gala Dinners on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.
If you fancy a scheduled airline, going East late on Christmas Eve or West on Christmas Day can be good.

I think you would get more replies if you said whether you want a trad cold xmas or a sunny xmas?
    Budget?
Also if you had any board preferences?
How far you were thinking of or prepared to travel?

Deffo warm. I don't really have a particular budget but am looking for vfm (which is different to cost).

I don't mind long haul if you can get a good deal. It doesn't have to actually be christmas, it could be before or after but needs to be in school holidays

Canaries is the only short haul with half decent weather in the winter. Cape Verde Islands are set to become the new Canaries (but I think they will be pretty raw for a couple more years).
After that its long haul. First Choice are doing offers on the Maldives.

I still go to SE Asia every year, because once you've paid for your flights, the rest is relatively inexpensive.
You can live in the lap of luxury if you wish. Bank on 500 to 550 each for International flight costs alone. After that, it's plain sailing....with a little help from your friends.

I haven't spent Christmas in the UK for more than ten years. I'm generally close to or on the beach somewhere.

Temps from 25 to 35 degrees Centigrade.

I don't know the exact dates but they were having a publicity drive recently on it. It was someone on here that told me about it. I had a look myself & it was less than I thought.
Just have a play around with the dates & resorts, the resort that was really cheap was Dvonille (SP or similar?).

We went to Goa (Candolim) a couple of years ago. It cost £3000 for 5 of us which does seem a bit pricey, but you just can't spend your money when you are there. 50p for a pint of kingfisher lager, £10 at most for meal for 2 and so on. And we made use of the jewellers. I bought a gold and diamond ring which has been valued at 3 times what i paid for it. It would have cost exactly the same to go to Tenerife i found but we would have spent a lot more during the holiday going there instead of Goa.

    Interesting thoughts. Thanks.

    What's Cyprus like at Christmas?
