Tiling over plasterboard

Lol - I ought to print that off as a testimonial
Just glad it's not an issue, last thing I need at the moment would be to have to take the whole lot off and do it all again.0 -
I prefer using marine ply as a backing for tiles in a shower area and green plasterboard is the minimum requirement.0

If you'd have got it wrong you would not have needed to take it off, it would already be on the deck:D:D
Take care,;);)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Hi all! Sorry I've not replied, been dead busy lately!cyclonebri1 wrote: »Sorry, but quite likely wrong. Readymix will work provided it is given time.
OP, your post is a little vague, you talk about 2 types of tiles, both the same size but 1 porcelain and 1 ceramic???
I don't get you.
Also. You say you are tiling onto plasterboard?, raw or skimmed?, makes a great difference to the load that can be supported, hence my point.
There are 2 types of tiles as the bathroom was already half-tiled when we moved in and the plumber removed 3 to put the pipe in for the shower. I didn't want to have to remove the rest of the tiles that were already there so I picked tiles that matched the colour best and they happened to be porcelain. The tiles I picked to put above to cover the rest of the walls are ceramic.
It is just raw plasterboard, I think. It was brown and paper-y.For what it's worth i also used ready mixed adhesive(Dunlop) and it was fine though too thick and hard to apply directly to the plasterboard, but i would wait a couple of days to see how it is before grouting. Though it should be fine, and i would never use ready mixed tile adhesive again.
Regarding the gap you filled in. I cannot really say as i don't know if it has anything against it, though if not i would advise that the tiles you are covering it with have at least a 50% grounding on the clean plasterboard. Also when using this ready mixed adhesive make sure that you use it liberally as soaking into the plasterboard is bonding as far as i'm concerned.
We gave it three days and the tiles seemed totally secure, so we've now grouted. We're hoping it's going to stand the test of time. A few people on here have said that it should be fine, so I'm hoping so!
I don't know what you mean about the gap we filled in having anything against it? My partner just put newspaper around the pipe then applied the patching plaster (took 4 applications a few days - a week apart to fill the hole entirely). He said he knew what he was doing...
I believe we did use it liberally as the tub said the coverage was 5m2 but it covered less than 4m2.
The only questions I have left really is if you can tile straight onto patching plaster or if we should use a primer first? And how long should we leave the plaster before tiling? A few places on the internet have said 4 weeks, but this has never been specific for patching plaster so i thought I'd ask. Someone said the tiles should be at least 50% on the plasterboard but as there are other tiles on the wall and we're just filling the gap, this isn't possible. I think we may just have to hope for the best on that one.0 -
Reply as per my post to Stooby chap,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
