Changing Forum Password

Did anyone else get a PM from MSE Admin asking them to change their forum password?

I did, and it was originally timestamped as the Epoch. :D

I replied to notify them of this ;) and also to ask what would happen if I DIDN'T change my password. (I haven't yet). No reply as yet (although the PM timestamp has changed).

But another thought has arose ... how can they determine that my password is "weak" (in their eyes)? Surely they're not storing our passwords in clear text in their database, or using a weak encoding method?

I've had no contact at all from the forum admins.
    Is your password weak?

No, that would be too obvious. It's "We@k"

(Sorry for the weak attempt at humour)
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

I think MSE use software to determine the strength of your password, the team themselves do not know your password, the system will sniff and flag any that are weak.

You will not get a direct response by replying to the message as it will be automatically sent, the team have asked that those who receive the message do not advertise on the forums that they have the message, mainly because it means someone unscrupulous could sift those with strong and weak passwords in an attempt to crack them.

It would be nice if the team let us all know if the password change is mandatory or voluntary but they seem reluctant to discuss it any further. Maybe the question should be asked in the feedback board.

I'd almost certainly have thought an invitation to sign in somewhere and change a password was phishing. I do hope there was no link to the site in the email.

No link. Just a request to use the forum CP and change the password. And it was a PM from a green banner MSE account. All legit. :)
