I recommend motorbikes for the young. You may kill yourself but you're unlikely to kill many others, and they are cheaper and much more fun. Also you get there quicker.
I cannot argue with that logic, HOWEVER.... whilst mpg figures have improved enormously in the cars I've had since the 70's , the figures for motorcycles seems to have remained the same or got worse... Or is it that the emphasis is just on performance?0 -
An old 5 series at £1000 won't do much to stimulate the economy!
That's about bang on the money I anticipate looking at as well.
Good to see that the crushing burden of student debt won't inhibit the young from stimulating the consumer economy.
This has been said before, actually gadgetmind said the same thing, I never understand people buying brand new little econoboxes running on the fuel of the devil when they could have almost any car they wanted secondhand. 10k buys you an ok rolls royce for heaven's sake!
For example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1981-Rolls-Royce-Silver-Spur-nice-original-car-/111123633373?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item19df7c14dd0 -

No, no, no, no and absolutely f***ing no!!!! (apologies for swearing all beat it starred out!)
Motorbikes are the most dangerous way imaginable to travel, advising young irresponsible drivers to get on them is idiotic. You can also be the safest motorcyclist in the world, it doesn't make you much less vulnerable. A close friend of mine (a woman in her early 30s with a husband and two young children) died a couple of years ago on a motorbike, she was doing nothing whatsoever wrong and a car pulled straight out in front of her at a junction, she went into the side of it, over the roof and landed on her head breaking her neck in 5 places.
I've never had one and never will (even before that happened I wouldn't have!)If you don't like what I say slap me around with a large trout and PM me to tell me why.
If you do like it please hit the thanks button.0 -

And if we're going for random stories, my dad has been driving bikes since the age of 16, Over 40 years, all over the world without incident. Where as he's had two crashes in cars...0 -
Slightly off thread but I ditched my car for a bike in the summer.
A couple of panniers make it easy to carry laptop, pack up etc etc. No we're down to a one car family.
Its the best 'career decision' Ive made in 20 years and biking to and from work is easily the best part of my day.
Save a packet, able to partially unwind and its part of a larger fitness regime.
I should have done it years ago.0 -

Comments (PoS) like that are great when you know that you're the one saving a fortune with that car. 10 years ago I had an A4 I bought with 138k on it, fantastic car and no real issues other than servicing in 40k miles done in it. I always tend to get cars that are over 100k miles now.
Good to know there is a market for 14 yr old audi A4s like my Husband's lol. It too has hundreds of thousands of miles on it.0 -

Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine0 -
Buying it "second" hand at 100K is one thing using it for years and moving it to 200K is another, but selling it at 200K+ is possibly beyond my skills - my own garage advised me - run it till it dies. Its so well made there's bound to be £200 scrap in it!!
Recently sold a 10 year old TDI Golf with well over 190k miles on it. Buyer (dealer) travelled halfway across the country to collect it and depreciation I had over 4 years was around £300 a year with no other costs than servicing.
So yes it is possible to sell high mileage cars that have been looked after.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

I disagree. Any vehicle can be dangerous but being nice and warm inside a car can give people an inflated sense of safety. I think it'd be a good thing if all drivers started out on motorcycles. I think it would instil a much greater road awareness than any number of driving lessons could provide.
To the subject in hand; Used sensibly finance on a vehicle can be a excellent way of getting something you'll enjoy and appreciate. If you can afford it then using a PCP plan and changing every few years is probably going to work out better than buying new in cash.
The deals with new cars with bundled insurance, servicing etc could reduce costs for the right people. It's more a case of doing what suit you're needs and circumstances best.0
