Has anyone got a Moto G? What's it like? And how is hspa+?

Hi all

Thinking of replacing my Sony Xperia U as it's getting a bit long in the tooth. I'm on a sim only contract with Three, so whilst the 4G speeds for no extra money that 3 offer is appealing, the value of the Moto G compensates for that.

I realise they are relatively new, but does anyone have a Moto G? Especially one on the three network. Would you recommend?

Cheers

The Moto G is currently the top rated budget smartphone and offers mid range capability at a budget range price. Comes top of any charts that i've seen for budget smartphones.

I've ordered one, due monday, but based on reviews and comments i'm expecting Great Things.

Oh, and Tesco are doing them for £99 / £129 for the 8GB and 16GB respectively, locked to Tesco, but you can get an unlock code on ebay for £2.

/Hijack - whose network do Tesco use?

Lord Google tells me it is O2. Which means the Tesco Moto G might be a good surprise gift for the Mrs, to use with a GiffGaff SIM (who use the O2 network, so I suspect a Tesco phone will work with GG).

Edit: no it won't, not without an unlock code from Ebay (£2 ish).

£2.04, actually, for the unlock code on Ebay, via smgreen1969 who is a national hero (and possibly extremely rich!).

I have one, but I can't help as it's my first experience of a posh phone so don't know my 4rse from my elbow. I'm also with the Tesco lot, not three (can't get a three signal in my house).

However..... FWIW I like it ... although I do need to get a case for it as it's a bit slippy in my hands when trying to lean out and take photos of swollen rivers etc .... so constantly in fear of dropping it.

Takes nice photos .... er .... see, told you I don't know my 4rse from my elbow.

I've recently got one and an update from an older Android Motorola Defy+

Unlocked using SMGreen via ebay, simple to do.
Perfomance is fast, internet speeds seem fast (for a smart phone) and an improvement over my HDSPA Moto Defy.

Kitkat android update now being rolled out to some Moto G's (incl Tesco MotoG's)

For £99 it's a superb phone and in my mind comparable to a £200 smartphone. Lots of support on various forums so ideal if you're new to Android or like to tinker.

As would be expected it charges up much faster using my 2amp Samsung galaxy tab charger compared to my Motorola 0.8amp charger (the manual says it will limit charging to 1.5a if using anything higher than that.

Simple - once you've worked out how to get a numeric keypad to come up to enter the unlock code!

I charge it via the enclosed USB cable and my PC. Takes a fair time, but who's counting?

The Moto G's 4.4.2 KitKat update has just been downloaded (188 MB) via WiFi, very slowly and jerkily, presumably because the servers are busy.

"Installing system update" and "Optimising app nn of 137" (in my case) took about five minutes and a total of two reboots before I got
"Update complete: your Moto G has been successfully updated to version: 174.44.9.en.GB"

Of course you don't dare interrupt this update process because of a flat battery - be warned that it seems to take about 50% of the battery's charge to carry out the update...

If you read the ebay advert from SMGreen he says how to do this, insert non Tesco sim, phone asks you to enter the code and off you go. I don't recall any issues at all doing mine, but you must of course insert a non tesco sim to get the ball rolling.

Good point about the battery usage, mine also took about 45% battery for the 5 minutes updating. All seems fine once updated. Still finding the phone dialler less simple than my older android phones though.

Yes, I did read Simon's writeup, but I never got the numeric keypad to come up automatically (as you might have expected) when the "Enter unlock code" was displayed, and only much finger-stabbing caused it to appear!

Seems at least two people have successfully upgraded an unlocked Moto G to KitKat! :T
