Opinions - LG G2 vs HTC One (vs poss iPhone 5s)

Hi all!

Just after a couple of opinions about which phone to choose.

Had an S3 for about 18 months. It's been awful! Never worked properly, Orange have replaced twice and "fixed" once and it's still crap. Technically tied in to my contract till June.

They said I could early upgrade for £114 plus a fee towards the price of the handset I choose.

OR

I can cancel outright for £140 and just go elsewhere.

If I cancel outright I am looking at either:

HTC One - circa £32pm (1000mins, unlimited text and data) + £100 redemption cash back
LG G2 £27 (500mins unlimited text and data) + £100 redemption
potentially iPhone 5s (never had an iphone so not sure it's worth me paying a bigger contract for really) £37.99 (500 mins, unlimited texts and data) + £100 redemption cash back

Just wondering what people's thoughts are? Firstly on whether the early upgrade is worth taking over a complete cancel (Orange have been a total nightmare for me so not sure it's worth staying with them) and secondly from anyone who has already got a HTC One or LG G2 so I can get an idea of what the handsets are like.

Techradar top phones list ranked them at number 1 and 2 and very closely contested.

My thought is that you shouldn't pay for Orange's incompetence in repairing a faulty phone (if it really was the case).

Believe me I am completely with you! The issue is that there a small faults which don't always render the phone unusable and therefore there is no glaringly obvious issue that they will "fix" - except for the last time I sent it to them in November.

The first issues which went on for over a year were that the phone would either cut out after being on the line for more than a minute OR the other person couldn't hear me properly (as if I was under water).

They acknowledged this and gave me a new phone - and then another.

Then the phone just stopped working in October and wouldn't turn on. For no apparent reason. Sent it back and they fixed it but seem to have a completely different OS on there that has changed layouts etc. That doesn't massively bother me but the mobile data just works when it wants to now. Sometimes I have to re-start my phone up to 10 times until it will come on.

Either way - I think I just want shot of them now and it's clear that they aren't going to do a thing about it so I'm going to get out.

LG G2 or HTC One reccs anyone?

As someone who has recently upgraded from the HTC One Xl to an LG G2 I can say that I was happy with both phones.

The HTC One XL isn't the current HTC One which you've been offered and when I did upgrade I looked at the HTC One, G2, Sony Xperia and Nexus 5.

I eliminated the Sony early on as it has almost identical specs to the G2 but was much more expensive.

Likewise, the Nexus 5 seems like a great phone from all my research but is expensive compared to it's competitors.

So, when it came down to the HTC One or G2 I had a chat with a couple of different store reps. both of them said there really isn't much to choose between them but they felt the LG had the edge.

I've had it for about 6 weeks now and am more than happy with it. The battery could do with being a bit better but I think that's the same with all smart phones nowadays.

the phone itself is very fast and responsive, I can definitely notice the improved processor speed compared to my old HTC. The camera is pretty good, reception is fine and the phone seems very well made.

My only real niggle is that when it goes to sleep you can sometimes turn it on just by tapping the screen but sometimes it doesn't seem to respond so you need to press the button on the back. I think you have to tap it in a certain way or place but I still don't know why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't!

I've stuck with HTC for several years now after switching from Nokia so was a bit wary of trying LG but I'm more than happy with it.

    Both very good phones.
My work colleague has a HTC One and I've just got a G2.

I think his comes out on top with the front speakers, music sounds amazing for a phone on his.

looking on gsmarena, the HTC One has higher pixel density too, though slightly smaller screen.

I think both main cameras are good, maybe G2 might have a slight edge, but hard to tell. The HTC only has 4MP, but uses diggerypokery to give better image quality than expected.

HTC also starts at 32GB, LG G2 generally 16GB (10GB usable) and no card slots.

Overall I think the HTC One is better overall, but the LG G2 can be got for a much better price, so horses for courses.
  • Thanks both!

    Really useful answers!

I rarely listen to music on my phone but I do take lots of photo's. It was the lack of card slot that has been my only issue around the G2 as I'm wary that after installing lots of apps/taking photo's I may reach capacity far sooner.

The price is amazing though for the G2.

    Hmmmm..

May have to get a few more responses before I decide :) it's 1 for 1 at the minute and I am probably the most indecisive person in the world!

I have had the HTC One since August and I really like it. I had the HTC Desire previous the the One and liked that one too.

The only thing I dislike about the One is that during the recent Android update the options for the keyboard lay out were reduced - I picked the One over the One Mini because the One had the option of a 'Phone' keyboard rather than Qwerty but that option has now gone and I'm stuck with the Qwerty.
This may not matter to you but my chunky fingers and long nails keep making spelling mistakes!!

I am a HTC girl and OH has had 2 HTC windows phones and both of us kept them for months after our initial contracts ended. In the end we upgraded to reduce our monthly tariffs. We both prefer HTC over all of the other phones we have had.

I find the camera really good, in fact I use my phone rather than camera for all my pictures now. The battery life seems to be good but I turn off WiFi etc when I don't need it on. Also, I can now print directly from my phone to my wireless printer as this was part of the Android update. I can't think of anything else at the moment, IMHO the HTC is a really good phone :-)

As an aside, I pay £27 pcm for mine on O2 (through Carphonewarehouse) and get unlimted minutes and texts with 1GB data, I did have to pay for the handset but that was offset by cashback from TCB which was instant rather than by redemption.

  • Ahhh interesting re. the the carphonewarehouse bit.

I was actually looking at some of the deals sites like buymobiles.net because I may also be able to get a free gift too lol but maybe I should check them and phones4u as well.

Was going to also try doing it via a cashback site - I'm a member of top cash back so might have a look at whether the other sites i was looking to purchase through have offers!

I am a little confused by that comment, one thing the Nexus 5 isn't is 'expensive compared to it's competitors'
