but what person/s could plan for this tragic story , BOTH parents at the same time , any person would need many thousands of pounds to deal with it, surley only a small % of people could ride this out without being stuck
Neither parent have any use for the house. Not sure why son has not provided for himself though.0 -
Maybe so , but all of us have a vision of leaving something for the kids , i know its life but its just very very sadNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

Does the Council have any responsibility for rehousing OP's friend in Council housing?, ie as the payoff for "going quietly" from the house so that they can grab it?0

Presumably it will depend on Paul's circumstances, unemployed etc0 -
Can you or Paul check whether his father was screened for NHS continuing health care funding?
If not, he needs to get this done asap (I can offer advice in this area if needed).0 -
Thank you for you help, I do know that Paul only is only on minimum wage, so he can't afford to buy the house, so thats a no go.
I have just found out that Paul's mum (stroke 8 weeks ago) isn't even getting physio in hospital, and they want her out, so social services want to put her in a home.
As far as I can see this is a failing of the NHS and very little effort getting his mother well enough to go home.
Also I believed that if someone had dimemtia their home cost were covered, is this not the case?
What really bugs me is these people were promised buy the government that they would be looked after in their old age, not have to pay for it themselves, i know it won't happen for us, but they were promised it.0 -

If he's on minimum wage then he should just qualify for housing benefit towards rent in the usual way.
There's a decent guide on care home funding here:

What happens if someone else lives in your property?
Even if the house is in your name, the value of your property will not
count as capital if your spouse, civil partner or partner lives there, or if
your estranged or divorced partner, who is a lone parent, lives there.
The value of your property is also ignored if a close relative continues to live
there who is:
• incapacitated (they receive or would qualify for a disability benefit)
• a child you are responsible for under the age of 18
• aged 60 or over.
Sometimes, the council may allow a person, such as a younger relative,
to remain living in your house, but the council can place a legal charge
against the property so that they can recover their money when it is sold0 -

No. Sorry.
NHS Continuing Care Funding isn't about a diagnosis, its about level of health care needs and most people in Nursing Homes would not have a high enough level of need to meet the eligability criteria.....But some do, and so its really important that everyone is screened for a continuing care assessment.
Paul should check as a matter of urgency that this has been done.0 -

Well they are being looked after really. Care can easily cost £2000 or more a month, so the proceeds of the house sale could well run out long before their need for care does.
What is wrong imo is that people who saved all their lives thinking they could leave it to their kids would have been better off blowing the lot on cruises and champagne and ending up with nothing.
Not sure what the answer is to that though.0
