anyway, you still can't get a turntable in your pocket or create your own playlists, or shuffle all your music as you choose, or take thousands of songs with you in the car etc. i'd say that the technology is vastly better than it was.

...or play any music that's been made in the last 30 years...
What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

A lot of what you say is true but that doesn't alter the fact that 30 year hifi can sound as good if not better than modern systems.

    That's just rubbish!!!!

Half the time the issue isn't that the item is thrown out due to disrepair, its thrown out because its out of date and something newer and more advanced has arrived.

I think the main problem is just peoples attitude towards consumerism, I am really into technology but I pick and choose what I spend my money on and would never replace something with a marginally better version unless I can get an excellent resale value for the old one.

If you look at the computer industry, a PC is massively upgradable, which means that the lifespan can be greatly extended from its original whereas something like an ipad is static and cannot be upgraded once purchased to improve the performance.

Another example, my friends 2 year old VW golf GTI had an engine problem and VW just replaced the entire engine as it was more cost effective than paying for skilled labour to repair it apparently. While this is excellent from a customer service point of view, I can't help but feel it is a little bit sad at the waste involved. Although they may refurb the 'old' engine for all I know.

I have my old TV in my bedroom. I bought it in 2003. It looks like this :-

    It's about 4 feet deep.

This is my newest TV - bought 2 years ago.

Music is still released on vinyl sometimes. :)

Having vinyl and a MPs player aren't mutually exclusive. DH has both. I have an MP3 player. I just haven't actually worked out how to use it yet :o. I get DH to put my music on at weekends:o :o

I own a modern turntable - I play it (rarely) through modern speakers and a modern sound system...

I think that's the thing I struggle with....

In what way is it a whole new world?

We got rid of our last big tv last year, primarily because dh was fed up of lifting it (we move furniture a lot ) but it dodn't really work in any fundamentally different way.

Our 'best' tv hangs in our kitchen. I really hate it. Its got really clear picture and I despise that, I hate big screens. But essentially it plays the same programmes as the old one did, with the same audio playing.

Of course, one expects improvements in technology....but whole new worlds? For me no, the world is the same. I'm just not discerning enough, and I would appreciate there are a minority of people for whom this really is a passion and the upgrade is truly valuable for work and interest to make a difference. For the average consumer? I really think its 'habit' and 'consumer peer pressure'
