toilet soil pipe blocked at drain in garden

not the nicest of subjects and apoligies for posting over tea!

the outside soil pipe where it meets the drian in the garden has backed up into the garden. yuk.

the soil pipe meets the drian where the conservatory drainpipes goes in. from looking at next door it seems this was done when the conny was built as next doors soil pipe goes straight into the ground.

so i cleaned it all out. yuk agian. it flushes ok and the water drains. after comparing to the washing machine/sink drian it seems theres a removable 'cup' type peice of drain that covers the drian outflow in both of them. i can see this works in the sink drian but surely in the soil drian it will stop 'soilds' drianing away? which it had.

im confused. has this been put in by a novice or is this right and theres another problem somewhere. the novice in me is saying removing it then soilds can run straight through into the drian?

cheers

I'd love to offer advice, but I can't picture the scene... luckily for me!

We are talking a soil pipe from t'bog, right? I wouldn't expect anything whatsoever to restrict flow from the po. No U bend (that's why there's one at the potty itself), and really no trap of any kind. I would expect a trap (U bend type) for any other flow (from gutter downpipe, say). But bog pipe, down, out and smooth and fast.

Maybe a photo would help ()... others (:D) as I'm off now!

What have you got in the conservatory?

If the two meet then it sounds like the conservatory rain water is going into the foul waste.

I hope it's not the other way round and the foul is going into a storm drain.

    cheers!
  • Is that a round concrete drain cover at the bottom of the photo?

If so could do with a pic of the inside.

From my experience, your soil pipe should have no restrictions until it reaches an inspection chamber, usually where the perimeter of the house grounds meet the path outside. Mine is at the end of our driveway, with a cover over it. In this inspection chamber there is an s bend, just like the one in your loo.

Im guessing that theres a sort of junction chamber where the conny outflow joins to the soil pipe. If the blockage was here, it may have been caused by leaves washed down off the conny roof.

I can't really understood what you mean about caps - apart from things that may have been fitted to hold back leaves, I'm baffled by your description. Do you mean there are things there that actually block the flow in some way - surely not.

Perhaps you could describe a different way.

    cheers for the replies.

rodney, the round looking think is where a buckets been and stained the patio! we only moved in 2 mnths ago and the gardens been put off till summer!

john, ur rite. what ive been seeing is the cap to hold back leaves. after hours on here, ive figured what u just said! the soil pipe goes way down and the conny pipe joins it.

the soil is then backing up to the weakest point which is the conny gulley, and coming out at the top. ive rang yorkshire water and there guna jet the main sewer for the houses tomo and see if that fixes it. fingers crossed.

should give you an idea what it looks like below ground.

Is there a manhole? you could open it see if that is blocked .

    update:

yorkshire water come out and said their drains are fine so ive had another look and see photos below.

it seems i was right the first time. the soil pipe flows into the same gully as the conny rain water then flows into the sewer. with the leave catcher there it was stopping the solids flowing through. shall i just remove the leave catcher and why was it done like this in the first place?!

the leave catcher that when in place stops the flow of soilds?
  • Remove the leaf catcher and make sure there is no gap round the outside of the white pipe.

This is odd. Are you saying that the leaf catcher is that black tube lying on it's side in the last pic? It fits down that hole adjacent to where the white pipe goes in? And are you saying that, when fitted, it blocks in some way the flow down the main soil pipe?

Does it totally block the flow even when no leaves are in it or just when theres a leaf build up. I would go for the latter but I'd need to see how the black tube is designed.

Perhaps the previous owners just got used to cleaning that out regularly.

I would go instead for removing that leaf catcher and instead put a leaf catcher at the top of that white pipe, ie where it connects to the conny guttering. That way, if you have a leaf build up you just get an overflow from your guttering - much less of a problem than sewerage all over the place.
