Not sure if you're aware but Check a Trade are one to avoid!!!!
Absolutely ANYONE can advertise on check a trade......and there's some rights sharks on there! I know that for a fact, bad it's well known in the industry. Check a trade works for tradesmen.....and that's how they make their money.
The best (though not infallible) is Which Magazine when looking for a trade desman, avoid check a trade at all costs. One roofing company who advertises on Check a TrAde (and I can supply names if allowed) are the biggest badgers and crooks going. They do TERRIBLe work and overcharge by THOUSANDS.
Check a trade is just a clever marketing site out to make money.
What's the difference between checkatrade and which? I've done well from checkatrade so far. I like to think it's obvious when someone's added their own reviews (maybe not!). For my windows I added a review (the same) to both checkatrade and which.0 -

Hi,
Chekatrade is an advertising website, and tradesmen pay to advertise on there. All they need is proof of who they are (couple of utility bills) and a few other bits that anyone can get. Checks trade claim that they vet a minimum of 2 jobs the trader has carried out, but they often don't bother to check, and even if they do they a) send round an unqualified person to look at the work and b) have no proof that the tradesman actually did any work at the address. For all they know they could be visiting his sister's address, and looking at a fake invoice.
Chekatrade are just as useless as the Federation of Master Builders. They too allow anyone to use their logo, provided they pay for it.
Checkatrades reviews cannot be taken seriously, either. Tradesmen can get their family and friends to put false glowing reviews on there.
Also, checkatrade rarely post any bad reviews.....which speaks volumes.
I know for a FACT that a crooked con artist who claims to be a roofer of a roofing company, has conned elderly people out of thousands of pounds for not just unnecessary work, but terrible shoddy work. I can supply proof of that, and if MSE allow me to name and shame them I am happy do so.
The reason that Which magazine is better at finding good reputable tradesmen is that they cannot pay to advertise on there, it's all word of mouth from local customers. Of course, that isn't to say that a deceptive tradesmen wouldn't get his family to put false reviews on there, but he'd soon be rumbled, as genuine customers would put the truth up if they found the recommended tradesman to be rubbish or crooked. Unlike checkatrade who don't like to publish bad reviews, as they will lose the tradesman's advertising fees.
You can be lucky and find a reputable builder on checkatrade, but you're taking much more risk than you are on Which.0
