vlc works playing some files, it's clearly not working playing the ones you want it to, so it's not working.
it's not evident at all that a new system will cure the vlc problem, a software bug is a software bug, I've come across quite a few in vlc over the years, in all cases, the hardware was not relevant.
The fact that the same video plays on your machine in three different players, but doesn't play in vlc, tells you it has absolutely nothing to do with the machine or your recording device.
People on the other thread, (and the one below your post), disagree, saying for example: " VLC probably needs more resources to play this type of file", and: "OK, your graphics card has 64MB of RAM on it. Min spec for VLC at 1080p is 256MB of graphics RAM.
Next on your list, you have 512MB of computer RAM. For a 500MB video, I'd really want 2GB of RAM (i.e. 4x that amount) as a starting point.
Those are probably the two main reasons why VLC is unable to play your video file."

Thanks, but I don't want to buy refurbished, ( secondhand), or have Windows 8.1 on it.
.
Don't be put off by the tag. If you are looking at A Grade, that is likely a machine that has been returned as unwanted, but now cannot be resold as new. Back by a full twelve month warranty.
If you think that you are getting better better deal by buying something that no consumer has touched before, think again.
My 'refurb' laptop still had the original plastic covering on it and is now four and a half years old.
In addition, don't be put off by a machine that has Windows 8 professional on it, because you can downgrade to Windows 7 for free and still have a windows 8 licence for when you may want or need to move up.
Don't limit yourself because of ignorance. These days, because of DSR there are many machines returned which then cannot be resold as new. Many a bargain for the canny shopper.
Remember that you too can order one of these 'refurbs' and return it if not suitable for a full refund.
So buy if it suits you, not because of a misleading 'label'.
DELL Outlet also have machines with Windows 7 Professional.
eBuyer, a plethora of machines with no OS.0 -

You've already said you can play the same video file using 3 other media players, is that the case?
If so, your machine is capable of playing the video...., and the problem is vlc, not your machine specs.!!

From the OP of the VLC thread: "Also the video playback, by one of the other players is jerky and the audio is slightly out of sync with the video." It makes watching and listening nigh on impossible, even the guy in the computer shop said my spec won't play the HD quality videos.
VLC plays non HD videos perfectly well, it won't play the HD videos as, from what I am learning on here, I don't have enough ram and/or to small a graphics,(video?), card.
