In my knowledge Mereway is the only UK make of kitchen that comes close to making a proper handleless kitchen (one which has channels recessed into the carcass with doors that are flat).

Do they do plinth drawers though?!

No reason why this shouldnt be possible.

If its about trying to squeeze some more space out of the kitchen, then again German kitchen would help. A number of them work on 780-800mm carcase systems rather than the 720mm which is the only option available with English kitchens.

It's not squeezing as much as using what is effectively dead space for storage of particular things. We had them in a London flat and really miss them now. They're just so damn useful!

We'll be having taller wall units etc to maximise space there, but the plinth drawers aren't negotiable for me and I don't want a bodge job (as suggested by another kitchen showroom).

  • The Mereway cabinet is the best quality and they do a true handleless kitchen with continuous profiles in white or aluminium. We also sell Pronorm German kitchens which offer their Y Line handleless system. Its a unique solution, the best looking and a best seller. Mereway still have the best cabinet though. You can buy both brands on the Internet with a design provided for free.
The J style doors are a cheaper solution but dont look so good when installed and are harder to keep clean in the recess of the J handle.
  • Have seen a kitchen designer with his own studio this week - he's coming out to see the space next week.

He's suggested a Hacker kitchen over Mereway for a number of reasons. Any thoughts or things I should be aware of here?

Second that recommendation. Hacker offer better quality, wider range for a lot less than Mereway - its probably one of the best value for money German products at its price point.. Hacker Systemat will be dearer and at that price point, it takes you into a price territory where you can look at other German products which are better value for money.

So since the guy came out at the end of February I've sent 6 emails and had 2 replies. He's apparently had some issues with his new baby, but said 3 weeks ago that he'd finished the stage 1 designs and would be in touch "the next day". 3 weeks later I've sent a chasing email.

Do I give up or is this normal for independents?

No its not normal independent or otherwise. Clear case of poor customer service and I am surprised that you have chosen to persevere. Consider what service you might receive post purchase of the picture pre-purchase is so poor.

That's what really worries me. :-/

I should be getting something within 48 hours, apparently. I'll give the benefit of the doubt until I see the designs.

We popped in at the weekend as we were in the area. Saw what he was working on, which was okay. He promised designs and price (inc breakdown) would be with me Monday. Got the designs today, but no costings. His family issues are obviously genuine (from chatting to him) but I can't believe that he isn't working at full speed for what will undoubtedly be a massive and expensive job!

    ((Sigh))
