Nexus 5 & 7 - slow charging Google/ASUS have no fix as yet

Sorry if this has been raised before (I have been away for a couple of weeks) but there is a current problem with the Google Nexus (ASUS) 7 tablet. Similar reports on Nexus 5 phone, although I do not have one of these.

Basically, I noticed mine was taking an age to charge since the Kit Kat upgrade. Looking on the web, there are lots of threads about this problem and, as yet, neither Google or ASUS have got a fix.

There have been some reports of the Nexus 7 having slow charging problems for some time, but it seems to have really taken off since the recent update to the Android operating system to Kit Kat.

Some people report that the tablet will not charge to 100% and discharges quickly, and others report that even when the device is on charge, using it creates a discharge faster than the charging.

There are some tempting bargains on the Nexus 7 at present, but be aware of this current problem before deciding to buy one and try Googling "Nexus 7 slow charging".

  • This may not be the case with your Nexus but some laptops etc have been reported as overheating and even catching fire with very fast chargers.
I wonder if this has been an issue with the Nexus and the latest update has slowed the charge rate for safety reasons.
In your position I would contact Google and ask if this is the case with the Nexus or if it is just an update glitch.

It's a known fault, I am afraid and one of the main Android magazines on sale in W H Smiths even have a small article on it. Some techies on the web have rolled back to previous versions of Android to get round the problem.

A couple of links here indicate the problem http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/wrTqHYhS-Vw%5B76-100-false%5D

It seems that the Nexus 5 phone is also affected, although I have no experience of this device

I have a nexus 7 working fine and charging OK with the latest update
Could just be a small percentage of people having trouble with it.

Hopefully I am in the minority then, but the problem is reported extensively on Android forums and elsewhere.

As long as potential purchasers are aware that the problem exists, even if only in a few cases, then they can make up their own mind. Apart from this fault, the tablet has been excellent.

What do you call slow? Mine charges in about 2 hours.

Mine used to as well, but I found that it would only put on about 40% or less in that time following the Kit Kat upgrade. As I said previously, the web is reporting that some stick at 50 - 60%.

I have added an app that definitely speeds up the charge and that has made it acceptable again, although not as fast as it was.

Although there are literally hundreds of posts on this problem, have a look here http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/wrTqHYhS-Vw%5B101-125-false%5D as this is one of the latest.

What version of the Android system are you running? 4.4, 4.4.1, 4.4.2 or earlier?

Mine is 4.4.2 stock at the moment. I haven't noticed it charging slower. I do use a mains charger rather than USB though.

Worth recalibrating by discharging the phone to about 5% left .
Then charge to 100% and use .

Some OTA updates really need a factory reset after install but that will wipe user data .
