Recommend a Greek Island Resort for Family

Help me find a place to go for some summer sun.

All we need is a simple place to stay close to a pool and a sandy beach in a quiet resort during the summer holidays. Self catering is fine - like to eat out so a few tavernas are a bonus. Don't need discos or entertainment.

2 Adults, 2 Kids 8&11.

Falaraki and Kavos need not apply.

    Naxos is great for families

What sort of budget do you have?
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Maybe somewhere where they say "please" and "thank you"?

Its best to see whats on offer; best deal locations seem to change from one year to the next. Rather than define an island, why not be more flexible and just select a quiet beach/pool location on any of the islands? If you stay away from the nightlife spots, the different islands are much the same in my experience. Also if you simply want beach and sun then the balearic islands will probably be cheaper.

We stayed in georgeopolis last summer and found it to be a perfect resort for our family; massive beach and separate bay that was never too crowded. Not too far from chania airport and more than enough decent tavernas for a fortnight.

Also beach beds and umbrellas around £5 a day that can be redeemed against food or drinks at the relevant bar
  • Thanks for the answers so far - really looking for personal recommondations of places that people have been to.

Can spend up to £2.5K on the two weeks + Food and Drink. Would like to spend less!

We really like the Greek Island vibe as it tends to be more relaxed than Spain and Portugal. Have travelled to most of the islands before kids, but want somewhere now that's family friendly. We've been to the same spot in Corfu a couple of times and would like to try a different island.

Thanks for that tip - exactly what I was hoping for.

Private villa? http://www.sanstefanoestate.com is fantastic, although it is Corfu...

Lots more at ownersdirect and homelidays.
  • We stayed at the Marianna Apartments in Tingaki, Kos last year and found it to be great. Nothing too fancy or over the top, but it had a great pool area and the bar on site was lovely too. It's located at the top of the main strip with several tavernas and bars within walking distance. Just outside the complex there is a local greengrocers and a couple of minutes walk away there is a huge supermarket and bakery if you wish to self cater.
The beach is around 10-15mins walk along the strip, however there is a bus stop right outside where you can get the bus to neighbouring Marmari and the beach there is great too so we did that a few days for a change. Plenty to see and do in Kos itself too. The quality of food in the local restaurants was really good and never very expensive even in the more upmarket places.

I'd also recommend Corfu as we've been there quite a lot. We normally stay in Billy's Rooms in Moraitika which is quite laid back but might be too quiet for an 11 year old? Kassiopi, Paleokastritsa and San Stefanos (as mentioned above) are all good choices though and well worth a look.

    Hi CountryGoose,

Couldn't resist responding to this, I love Greece, we are a couple with a child age 9 now.

Great advice above, would agree with Emma, do try Kos. We also stayed in Tingaki and Kos was brilliant, so much to do and easy to get around, we hired bikes, you can visit the volcano in Nissyros, also hot springs, there is lots to do.

Also went to Chania in Crete quite a while ago, spent a day in Georgiopolis and agree with the comments above. Loved Chania and Georgiopolis would be a good base. We also really liked Bali in Crete (4 beaches!), but be aware Crete is a big island so getting around it takes time. Bali may be a bit isolated for two weeks unless you hire a car.

I would also suggest looking at Parga (on the mainland) and Skiathos. We stayed in Platanias, doesnt really matter where you stay though the buses are good and Skiathos town is lovely. The beaches in Parga are more shingle than sand but still beautiful, and the central square where all the local families and children gathered was great in the evenings.

My favourite island though has to be Kefalonia, don't really know why exactly! Makriyialos beach in Lassi is beautiful. Short flight, short transfers, friendly people, great beaches, good food what's not to like!

Sadly a lot of resorts in Greece are much quieter these days and the tavernas are struggling. All the more reason to go self catering and help them out! As long as you avoid Kavos etc you shouldn't have a problem with being too noisy!

Your budget should be plenty, eating out and drinking is still affordable. Enjoy!

    Sue.

    Evi Studios in Pefkos, Rhodes

Not many places I would visit twice but this is definately one. Apartment comlex is small and very welcoming. Lovely clean pool and practically private beach with a nice shallow bay
