Like you HB, I've analysed this. It's become a lifestyle thing rather like walking down the street with horrendously expensive cups of coffee. Also I think there's a sense of entitlement that's grown up and a need to reward oneself. To me it's part of the whole materialism thing that brought us retail therapy.

The first time I heard the expression 'retail therapy' I thought it was funny. Twenty-five years later it seems to be a lot of people's hobby and I don't find it funny at all, given that a lot of the spending is borrowed money. I find that just sad.

As to walking around holding a cup of coffee, someone referred to them as 'sippy cups, you know, the kind that infants use' and from that moment on in my mind's eye all I've been able to see is adults wearing nappies, a bib and baby bonnets clutching their sippy cups, and I've found all of those people utterly ridiculous ever since. Probably not what they intended.

Welcome Mobo! I hope you find being with us and amongst us helpful. I don't know where I'd been if I hadn't found this thread when I needed it. Good luck with it.

    12/31 please, Shaggy.
    Better is good enough.

I confess to buying the odd cup of coffee when on the way to work but only when I haven't slept properly and my brain needs a shot of something galvanising to rev it into first gear! It's not a habit though.
