What is the best card for cashback? (123?)

Hi,

After many years of almost doing it, I've decided to actually go ahead and get a credit card, despite being slightly put off by the hassles.

After looking around, the Santander 123 card would probably be the best for us, but I'm open to suggestions if people have had bad experiences etc using Santander?

I'm guessing you can set up a direct debit so it automatically pays off the bill at the end of each month so that fees (and hassle) will be minimal.

Also, does anyone know if I have 2 Santander 123 accounts, and my girlfriend has 2 Santander 123 accounts, can we also have a joint account for both cashback (on the BTL property we joint own) as well as a joint credit card?

Thanks!

I'm not aware of any card that does not have such a feature.

According to their website you can have a max of 2 accounts each, whether sole or joint...which is where you are now.

No such thing as a joint credit card. There's always only one primary cardholder, so one of you will have to apply and the other be added as a secondary cardholder.

The "best" cashback card depends on your spending patterns. The Santander 123 is very good if most of your spending is on the things that they offer cashback on (although be aware that many supermarket petrol sales only seem to earn 1% for me - the same as the supermarket itself, so I no longer use it for them). However if you spend at other establishments, not covered by the 123 card, then you might want to consider a separate card for that spend.

Also if you put a lot through your credit card (in excess of 10 or 15K a year - for example I have a lot of work expenses on flights and hotels) then there are other options, such as CapitalOne or Amex which will pay more than 1% (which is why I don't use the 123 for petrol at supermarkets).

You might want to take a look at The Luma CashBack Credit card offering 4%. It's only on your first £225 monthly spend at supermarkets and petrol stations though. Be careful if applying that you are getting the CashBack Luma, as there is a standard Luma too. Check out the other thread on MSE for more info.

Thanks all for the replies :) Sounds like a credit card could be perfect then as you can easily set it to automatically pay off the remainder (I have a Halifax Clarity but only use it when we go on holiday)

It's a shame that the Luma cashback credit card isn't available at the moment - we don't really spend an awful lot of money other than at supermarkets (including using the petrol station there) so the 4% would have been ideal!

    Thanks again for your responses

If you have a halifax current account you should be able to get £5 a month on the account and another £5 a month on the clarity if you spend over £300, only 1.5% ish but better than nothing.
