age old question i know - best bathroom sanitaryware ?

Confused about wethere to take advantage of all the offers on bathystore.com , plumbnation etc etc with baths @ £109 , suites @ £299 etc

I dont want to carry out a false economy , our whole bathroom needs replacing , its tiny but it still has a standard bath in it , showerscreen , toilet and basin

Should i be specifically looking to buy AS or IS for example , or can i go budget on the bath/basin/toilet , and then spend a bit extra on taps ?

Also , i read somewhere that pop up wastes like leakingm , is this true or ?

Any tips welcome ,plumber booked for late Feb so i have a few weeks to get the lot in

We have a combi and dont want an electric shower so thinking a MIRA shower , a riser type effort with a hand held shower head haf way up sort of thing , the wall it sits on is very thin so pipework gubbins etc will have to sit outside the wall , and i dont really want to spend £200 + extra on a thermostat valve type thing

No problem with cheap sinks and toilets as a rule, though the toilet seats are usually throw away. Even the cheapest taps and showers from my employers (Wickes) have a ten year warranty.


The problem with cheap suites is invariably the baths. Poor quality wobbly thin acrylics. If you are going to spend extra on anything, spend it on the bath, and get a more solid double sprayed one.

Thanks CDDC , i see that a lot of the sheds are saying "strong baseboard" and such like , i haven’t seen many , at the price point I’m looking at admittedly that refer to double sprayed , i guess if i look higher up the price brackets , i might start seeing that description ?

Stick with brands for sanitary and brassware e.g Twyford, Ideal, Mira, Aqualisa. Mira Element is a good shower mixer. Haven't had problems with pop up wastes....buy quality with proper install is the trick.

I'd agree with diywhynot, Where you can stay with branded products the quality control on imported sanitary isn't always great. The other consideration you need to make is that buying online whilst may be cheaper if you have an issue that takes two or three days to resolve the plumber will be delayed and any saving you've made covers that.

Twyford bathrooms offer boxed packs that offer a saving over buying individual items and Trojan baths make a product called Trojancast which is similar to the market leading Carronite reinforcement but a cheaper range of baths with a 25 year guarantee.

+1 for trojan cast - very solid bath - got mine thru city plumbing as a special order as it's not their regular supplier, but was specified by customer.

Roca are also a good brand for sanitaryware I've found.

Steer away from 'cheap' sanitaryware - I've got to go and replace a basin that's scratched the glaze with everyday use, swilling razor in sink etc, so cheap basin = cheap glaze!

Any decent plumbers merchant will be able to get hold of Twyford & Trojan baths. In between posting my first reply & this one i've just had an email from Twyford with the current special prices on the boxed sanitary ware the most expensive pack is the Moda suite which should sell @ 298.80 inc vat.

Ok you need to stay within budget, but definitely don't go *cheap cheap* and steer clear of imported rubbish bought online that will come with no after sales service if/when things go wrong

Branded goods bought from reputable showrooms/plumbers' merchants are what you want as you have someone to go back to and they (should) have a reputation to worry about.

Buy the best you can afford - better to buy a less expensive range from a well-known co than something that looks the part but will fail after a short while

I love to shop on eBay, but will only buy stuff like sanitary ware if I know it is a great brand but heavily discounted - even then you can come unstuck if not careful, like the Crosswater towel rail that came with bits missing - but I did get some great Keuco & Hansgrohe accessories that were even cheaper than our friend in the trade could do them for

Our bathroom is ideal standard, the flat came fitted with a standard bath which was unfortunately plastic, we replaced it with a cast iron bath for £300, you can get them much cheaper if you buy second hand and have them re-enameled if they need it.
