Anyone know what this pipe is and if its important....

It's a diesel? Do the brakes feel OK? On a diesel, the alternator also usually contains a vacuum pump to provide a vacuum for the brake servo. The pipe is the right diameter to be that. If it's completely broken, you'll get a very stiff brake pedal as there'll be no servo assist.
Would the usual pumping the brake pedal a good few times till it is stiff with ignition off, then keeping foot on pedal and turning on ignition (the brake pedal should go down) test this?0 -
