Anyone know what this pipe is and if its important....
I think its an air inlet or outlet pipe coming from the altanator on my ford galaxy 1995 TDi model.
It has snapped my dad tied it out of the way so it didn't drag on the floor whilst driving and we looked in the haynes manual and we think that is what it is but don't kno what it does and if it is expensive to fix??
Its not rubber its a metal and snapped near a bend so don't think it could be taped and it looked hard to get to too.
I had my altanator replaced last year aug time so would the pipe and the alternator be under some sort of warrantee do you think?
Its just been one thing after another with this car:mad:
If anyone could put my mind at rest I'd be grateful
Many thanks

Don't know what it is but for a cheap temporary fix you could get a short length of rubber hose that has a slightly bigger inside diameter and clamp it over the two broken ends using jubilee clips.
If you have trouble getting the rubber hose over the metal pipe then let the end rest in a cup of boiled water for a few minutes to soften and expand the rubber.0 -
if it goes to the outside bit of the air filter element it's likely to be an air ducting pipe. These are very flexible pipes which appear somewhat corrugated and can be had for a couple of quid to buy in halfrauds AFAIK so shouldn't be too pricey to sort out. As I understand it however these pipes are not 100% important.
Another temporary fix could be duct tape if the ends will meet up.
I recently found some pipe fragments in my air filter box when changing the filter, so am facing having to change this pipe myself so please let us know how you get on.
This is the sort of stuff i'm thinking of...

If it's metal then it's probably an air conditioning pipe and it's a common fault on these. What goes around - comes around0

Take a photo and go onto a Ford owner's site. Or post it here and I could have a guess.Happy chappy0

Aha, it is called duck tape!
Well it's Duck Products Duct Tape, so both are correct.

Does the steering feel ok ?
A metal pipe near the alternator could be a pipe from the power steering pump.0 -
Thank you everyone for your replies.
I will try and get a photo and post it here for you to see.
The steering seems fine, I do know the power steering belt slips abit when there is wet weather around but other wise all is ok with that.
I am more than certain that it is coming out of the sltinator and it is a slim pipe prob 10-15mm in width, I also think it is more metal than the corrugated pipe.
I will nip out on my lunch break and get a photo if i can.
Thanks everyone0 -
hmmm - can't seem to put a picture here - if anyone wants to look at it i can email it to you - maybe someone can post it for me??? Sorry.....I'm not blond honest0

It's a diesel? Do the brakes feel OK? On a diesel, the alternator also usually contains a vacuum pump to provide a vacuum for the brake servo. The pipe is the right diameter to be that. If it's completely broken, you'll get a very stiff brake pedal as there'll be no servo assist.0
