I'm not convinced buying a phone outright is any cheaper, or much cheaper when after high-end phones/contracts.
I have never said that it was always the case, especially if you consider cashback and redemption deals.
I really don't see why anyone with "under £600 saved" shouldn't have a high end phone.
Again, I have never said this. Nothing wrong with having any phone if it costs your £10-£15 p.m. What's wrong is, when being in this position, to waste £30+ p.m. instead of saving a little. And as I said, very often this money is wasted on repaying a very expensive 'loan' taken specially for buying the above 'high end phone'.
forking out £500 upfront is harder to swallow than spreading the costs over two years.
It's emotions. If you have £500, the decision ultimately has to be based on simple calculations rather than on emotions.
And if you have savings paying you 3% interest it makes no sense to borrow money on a 'top end phone' even at 10% APR, let alone at 50%+ that pretty often is the case.
If there were no contracts, far fewer people would have smartphones and it would be bad for the industry and the consumer in the UK.
For the industry - certainly, but not for the customer.
  • Hi wyattwolf,

I ordered a new iPhone through Mobile Phones Direct and I would definitely recommend them. My previous network wanted £370 to upgrade me to an iPhone and change my contract plan from £21 per month to £37 per month. On Mobile Phones Direct, I received a "free" iPhone 5S and the contract was only £33 per month with unlimited texts, minutes and 1Gb of data which is more than I was getting before.

The only negative part of ordering through Mobile Phones Direct was it took a week to receive the new phone but I'd say it's worth it to save on the monthly tariffs. I was also able to transfer my number to my new contract without any issues.

    Hope this helps!
  • Just be careful with the number porting when I used a PAC code with t mobile they charge me for out of allowance data on day I changed £150 for a pitiful 20mbs which I am still fighting nearly a month on

At worst you can port your number away then back again. If you know the deal the reseller offers, then call your current provider to see if they can match. After asking for your PAC then retentions should call the next day and they do have the authority to do a deal.
