Whats is a Paypal 'eCheque' payment?

Oh yes... but you can't expect sellers to say 'Oh, it's ok, it's just paypal being slow... I don't mind at all that it takes 14 days to get paid!'

Paypal has a couple of positives - and one of them is INSTANT payments

had an email off a guy id bought something off saying that ebay had told him not to post until payment had cleared

ebay didnt have the decency to tell me this tho

turns out my credit card had expired and for some reason they hadnt emailed me to tell me to update the card details

is there any way of adding the credit card to an existing echeque payment that you already made so that the seller gets the cash immediately and will post it

Someone may know which party (if any) is able to cancel echeques...? I can never remember.

You can make a new payment instantly, but you'll have to figure out a way of getting rid of the echeque - you can't change that first payment.

the seller can refund the echeque payment but the refund will not go through until it has cleared

so if you update your card details and make another payment you will have paid twice until the first payment is cleared and then refunded

I just had this as well...paypal did some update to my account, then the next time I went to pay, the seller said I'd paid by echeque, as I was chasing up where the item was. If you ask me, its a way for ebay/paypal to make a little bit more money in interest by delaying payment for about a week.

Currently I have just had a buyer pay by echeque as well (I have no doubt that this was unintentional), and its saying its going to take 11 days in total to clear. That is a joke.

i use paypal and dont have a debit or credit card...usually i try and sell stuff so i have funds in my paypal to instantly pay but on occassion i dont and it goes through as the dreaded echeque...

im sick of people whinging about echeques like its the greatest sin of all...at the end of the day payment is made...i mean what is the big drama about....oh dear sellers may have to wait up to 2 weeks for it to clear but put it this way would you rather sell an item and be paid or have it sitting around unsold ?....i personally have no problems whatsoever receiving them!

Others have explained above how exactly the process works. As to those who say 'don't complain' about them - why on earth not? A buyer sends payment 'instantly' through Paypal, it arrives with me as an eCheque. Even though the funds won't clear for at least a week - and sometimes up to two weeks, the buyer will often expect you to send immediately. Not helped by Paypal, who don't inform the seller (a) that their payment is not instant with an eCheque, or (b) when the payment has actually cleared.

I would a hundred times rather receive a real cheque than an eCheque. At least people expect to have to wait for a cheque to clear ...

I wrote a complaint today regarding the info sent to buyers & sellers when an 'echeque' is initiated. My inderstanding is that a bank transfer via the USA is intitiated when a buyer has no valid debit/credit card verified on their paypal account. They can't just add one and resend the payment either , because paypal verifies their card with 2 deposits which the account holder has to see and verify, takes days to verify a new card.

Seller can refund the echeque but the buyer doesn't get their money back until the payment clears ! takes 2 weeks average !

Paypal deliberately (in my view) obfuscates the echeque with both buyer and seller by calling it an ECHEQUE INSTANT PURCHASE note they don't say 'payment' , that's downright deceitful in my view

Who else can I / We complain to ? Is there an ombudsman could give their view ?

Just be aware that paypal have just charged me £2.97 for the pleasure of having someone pay me by e-cheque instaed of paypal!!:mad:

Why, how and what for?

Not sure what you mean by "e-cheque instead of Paypal" an echeque is not an alternative to Paypal, its just not an instant payment.

Echeques are a pain but I've never been charged for one.
