European Car Insurance - Fully Comp & Unlimited time

i might have dreamt it but I vaguely remember reading the the latest EU directive says the the EU cover provided is the better of the legal min in the country you visit or in your country of residence.
Effect being that I get RTO cover in countries that have less than RTO as a legal minimum and whatever the legal minimum is in countries that have greater than RTO as the minimum.
As an OT aside, I think German min cover also includes a requirement to provide third party cover for any properly licensed driver even if they aren't named on the policy so presumably my UK policy would also give me that cover when I'm in Germany?0 -
My policy with Saga gives 365 days overseas use fully comp.0

If you are in another European country for more than six months I think EU rules say you must register the car there and do it within a month of arriving in that country.
There is a lot about this on French ex-pat sites. I know someone in a similar position who now has a car in France, registered to him at a friends French address, he has French insurance and now flies rather than drives to France many times a year.0
