European Car Insurance - Fully Comp & Unlimited time
Hi
I am currently insured with Stuart Collins fully comp and unlimited driving time in Europe. I am looking for a cheaper alternative company that can provide the same. I have tried Herts Insurance, LV, Saga plus a number of others that on closer examination are offering min insurance to drive in Europe e.g. 3rd party only.
Recommendations gratefully recieved.

Yours is a very specialist policy which is why it costs more and is not available easily
Some policies cover up to 3 months in one year comprehensive overseas without extra payment eg M&S0 -

Thanks Johnnyreggae - I really need unlimited. This year we will be in Europe (outside the UK) for 7 months. The max I have found is 6 months but the small print states 3rd party cover only.0 -
Try ASDA - they supposedly include a 365 day European policy."Retail is for suckers"

Third Party Only Cover
"Can I drive abroad on my policy?
Your policy will automatically cover you to drive in any countries which are members of the European Union to the minimum level of insurance required (usually third party only). If you require a higher level of cover please contact us and we can arrange this."

It's also for SDP use only0 -

Yep, as part of us being in the EU all UK policies must give unlimited cover (in terms of time) in other EU countries but, as you say above, the requirement only gives you enough cover to be legal so basically third party only.
If you want more you need to negotiate it with your insurer.......It's also for SDP use only
I'm less sure about the SDP only bit, I'd have thought that my automatic EU cover would need to cover the same classes of use (and drivers) as my UK cover so as I've got business cover then it would also apply EU wide. Be interesting to see a link on it if you've got one.0 -

I was referring to Asda where they upgrade cover to the same as the UK eg Comprehensive

I'm not sure on the insurance side of things, but you will need to speak to the companies to check. I know from the point of view of HMRC that if you are out of the country for more than 182 days in any year, then they don't consider you a permanent resident.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0 -

Ahh, I see, the SDP use limit only applies to the negotiated own damage part and not the mandatory third party bit.0 -

Felt it needed pointing out, as otherwise the OP could have gone with Asda and either ended up with TPO cover or if they had uprated to comprehensive (I suspect it would be prohibitively expensive) they may have not realised they only had SDP cover0 -

Technically they must give the lowest legal minimum in that country. In the UK it would be RTO which is below TPO as it would cover an accident on anything not covered by the Road Traffic Act.
Not a European expert but its probable that some countries have lower legal minimum covers than the UK and so they'd be further below RTO.0
