I think if you allow him on one piece of furniture (leather) and not another (material) you will totally confuse him. I would do all or nothing. You need to be persistent and as soon as he jumps up on either say 'no' firmly and lead him down. So long as you stick with this, and move him off immediately he should get the idea pretty quickly.

As far as when you are out - either make the room out of bounds or put barriers up to stop him, dining chairs as other have suggested or maybe empty washing baskets?

Couldnt have put it better myself. You are confusing him. I dont agree with dogs on furniture or allowed upstairs. Those places are for pack leaders (humans)
Why? our dogs are allowed on the couches but not the beds and they manage to stick to that.

I think you will probably find they do it when you are not there or you are the exception rather than the rule!

I brought this kind of spray the dog ate the bottle! Didn't stop her at all and was a complete waste of £6-7

I now cover my sofa with a tarp if away for long periods and blankets if only out for a few days. I then way the tarp down with tires.

Both my dogs are huskies anything else and they would be able to push it over

Are they all in the same room? And are the beds upstairs? I think it's more about them being together rather than them being suitable sitting areas.

My dog is allowed on the 2 seater sofa but not the matching 3 seater. The suite is new and before that she had access to both the old settees. It took less than a day to train her to only use the new 2 seater so it is certainly possible! I use a blanket on the sofa she is allowed on. If it is not there she won't jump up. :)

My dogs are allowed wherever they want, it's their house too. If I don't want them somewhere I'll tell them so and they'll move.

They're not here long enough so I want them to be as comfortable as possible as often as they like. Plus doggy cuddles after a long day are just divine!

They have one couch and one crate in the bedroom and we have 3 couches in the living room. Sometimes one will go upstairs and one stay downstairs.

I bought my dogs their own sofa to combat this. It was a scruffy, second hand 60's sofa but hey, who cares?

They only ever went on that sofa. Avoided the 'human' sofas.

I am afraid your dog has already decided he prefers the fabric chair lol. You may have to donate it to him and take the opportunity to get yourself a brand new chair and teach him to go on the old chair.
