Other programs will play because they are written in different ways and can manage memory differently too - it's not a failing of VLC, it is actually because it is more capable that it requires more resources..
The quick fix would be to buy more memory and a new graphics card. You'll spend maybe £50-£100, but you'll still have a computer running XP with a small hard disk.
Now, I'm not recommending Currys or this particular machine, but just saying that:

£350 will get you a new computer and monitor that would do the job nicely.
OK, may have a look at that one or may visit a couple of local computer shops.
I don't need a monitor as I only upgraded that to a 23" AOC LED IPS 12 months ago.
Is Windows 8 the way to go now?
I don't need a massive hard drive as I am probably only using about half of the one I have now.
From what I can understand I would be better off getting a large amount of RAM,(how big?), but what about the video,(graphics?), card?
Memory, (or is that RAM?).
Main thing I need a computer for is surfing, banking etc, some films and TV Catch up.

Windows 8 is the way to go now, and you may not think you need a massive hard drive, but I wouldn't go for anything less than 500GB these days.
Memory (RAM = Random Access Memory), minimum 4GB
I'm not up to speed on current PC graphics - I do my video & photo editing on a Mac, but I'd suggest a card with at least 256MB of graphics memory (preferrably 512MB) would do the job well for you.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0
