Test drove a year old 1.6 astra today all seemed ok and the price was keen.

Only surprising thing was the take it or leave it attitude they have, apparently no negotiation on screen price, car tax is extra plus £100 for hpi and mileage checks.

Screen price was £8,600 with 20,000 miles so not bad for just over a year old, however they bought it in and you could see some wear on controls so my guess it was a hire car which put me off a bit.

No, just noted a different approach from the normal hard sell and haggling.

I just assumed there would be room for negotiation, particularly as I haven't got a trade in, though always expected some of the add one such as scotch guarding, paint protection and the inevitable finance, though the lad selling didn't know the apr as they only do flat rate, unfortunately he didn't know that either.

Thanks for the response, it was a bit of a pointless ramble on reflection.

I don't know if the price is good or average or bad, I can sort of understand the take it or leave it attitude. With some dealers if they fetch a car in from another franchise they usually are less accomodating on negotiation, there are always cars oritems that are lower screen prices to choose from.

Why do you have to pay for the HPI and mileage checks?
And £100! must cost them at least £1 per car the number they do. Even the AA only charge £20 for a single car.

So you can actually add £100 to the screen price.

Ex Avis by any chance? Or executive driven "Vauxhall fleet car" (that VX register in their own name and then lease them out to Avis)?

I had bad experience with these guys last year. They were horrendous. I refused to pay the HPI check fee at the end of it all. Will not be going there again. Only proceeded with purchase of the car because DD had fallen in love with it apparently !!!!

Yeah I did point that out to the sales guy and his manager when he rocked up, but they said it was company policy, though it does irritate you, I can see the argument in excluding road tax but not something they are legally liable for anyway.

Price was pretty keen, about private sale initially and even after add ona slightly below main dealer guide from what I could glean from the internet.

That would set a lot of alarm bells ringing for me but I am very cynical when it comes to used car salesmen.

    What were they hiding???
