Screen replacement kits - is it false economy?

hi all
sorry if this has been posted before, I looked for some threads but couldn't see anything. I've got a samsung galaxy s3 and I've broke the screen in two places, it's at the edge and it's cracked all across the screen. The phone is still usable and the screen is working fine, but I'm worried it's just going to stop working or break completely.
I found a screen replacement kit for just under £7 where you get the screen and the tools, but I wondered if anyone had tried this and is it actually worth it? Or should I just pay the extra and go to a phone shop to get it sorted? It's not worth doing on my insurance due to the upfront cost of claiming.
Any thoughts very much appreciated

If your good at fixing things then its the cheapest option.
If your not the handy sort and have 5 thumbs on each hand then get someone else to do it.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Thank you. I've got fairly steady hands and generally ok at 'fiddly' things, so I'll probably take a risk with this and and see if it pays off.1% challenge - /100%

Changing just the glass* on the S3 is a !!!!!!! of a job. It's bonded to the LCD underneath.
*For £7 I'm asking it's not the whole assembly.0 -

Same with the HTC one X. Can get the glass cheap as chips, but as it's bonded to the LCD it's virtually impossible to replace. Instead I forked out £30 for a complete assembly and replaced the whole thing.
If you do decide to do it yourself, be very careful with any ribbons and connectors. They are very fragile!0 -
Job done right glass and or digitizer is fine .
Problem, is many many don't do the job right and end up with further damage and even blown components .0
