Nightclub bar refusing to give me change.

Abit of a strange one this question I think, and unsure if this is common or not so thought I would ask. Firstly, apologies if this is not in the correct forum, but it looked like it fitted in here more appropriately than other forums on the site.
Right, the title is somewhat over dramatic, but basically when I go to a certain chain of pubs, I never receive copper. For example, one time I paid 4.79 and with a five pound note and I only received 20 pence. When I do query this, I always get told "we just don't keep one or two pence in the till". Over the xmas period, someone at least gave me a decent excuse and said "we have given out so much change and run out over xmas". I know for a fact this is rubbish as I have ever never ever received any copper change from them.
I know, it doesn't break the bank, but if so many people every night don't get 4 pence, it must soon add up.
Are they doing anything wrong? I never want to fully argue the fact as I don't really know the rights. I'm not bitter, but I certainly don't agree with the practice as I work hard for my money and expect the correct change regardless of the amount.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know if what they're doing is legal, but if it was a regular occurrence I'd go to different pubs."Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000

Next time you go take your own pennies and tuppences and give then the right money every time, then they'll have no excuse that there's no coppers in the till

Technically, no, you have no right to be given change.
In your example, you were asked for £4.79 but chose to give the bar tender £5.00.
Of course, we have all become accustomed to receiving change, and it is reasonable to expect it.0 -
This reminds me of a casino I used to frequent that refused to make payouts of odd pence - would only round down. (So if you wanted to cashout £867.98, you'd only get £867)
I think it's a money making technique as all those pennies will quickly mount up!!
Bogus - drink elsewhere. But not before telling them why you won't be back

Having used to work in a busy nightclub... Simply put, we didn't get given change to hand out. Our float was in silver and above only.
If you've got 25 people in your tiny corner of the bar wanting a drink, the last thing you want to be doing is faffing around counting out a few pence so that they can have their full change, which inevitably ends up in some charity pot or on the floor anyway when they stumble away.£2023 in 2023 challenge - £17.79 January0 -

Bus companies have done this trick for years - and pay & and display ticket machines....................0

Our local bus service is the same - exact fare (or more) only - no change given.0

If they don't want to give coppers then they should charge in 5p increments.0

I know this is a money saving site but this is just ridiculous.0
