Hi
I moved house last year but its one of those change of address I forgot, this time its HMRC. Collected my HMRC letters from old address about Child Benefit repayment dated Nov 2013. I earned bit over the the threshold last year and need to repay. I am married and my OH claims child benefit. I haven't registered or repayed yet. Not sure how do I repay now, as it appear I am too late!!!
I am also not sure if I my OH should opt out of receiving child benefit because I dont know how much bonus would I be getting which may or may not get be beyond that threshold mark

You've got till the end of the month, but you need to get started now - register for self assessment you'll need to wait for IDs etc, then get your tax return done by the end of the month and pay what you owe. Don't be frightened by the term "self assessment", it's easy if your tax affairs are simple. It will work out what you owe from the figures you give.
If you're only a bit over £50k they won't take all the child ben off, it's only if you're certain you'll earn over £60k it's worth considering stopping it.0 -
Thanks zagfles.
I read I could reduce the charity donation which I did through just giving and some to my local community by cash. Do I need to just submit the information about how much I donated or I also need to print the Justgiving page as a evidence of it!0 -

You don't need to send them the evidence but you need to have it available in case they query it. If you don't have receipts just make sure you make a note of the charity and approximate date. The charity should have the records as you need to give name and address in order to gift-aid.
Also there's a lot of places like zoos, castles, space centre etc where you can gift-aid your admission, sometimes they charge 10% more if you gift-aid it but it's well worth it as you'll get at least 25% back.0 -
Thanks once more zagfles.
Just spoke the HMRC, and they said just giving donation does not count for reduction. Only those which are reflected in my P60 would i.e. only giving which are reflected in my payslip.
If I give to a charity number like cancer research using just giving my employer wont record that in my P60, so how am I suppose to prove that?
Also got the registration auto response and its sya "6 to 8 weeks"! I will be well into end of Feb by that time before I submit my self assessment form, Oh dear...0 -

You don't need to prove anything when you submit the tax return, there's a box for gift aid donations, just enter the amount in this box and it'll work everything out.0 -
I am confident you are right and will form it up that way. I only fear that I don't get penalised for late submission as its another few weeks before I get my IDs' to submit my returns.
Thanks a ton for your guidance. Awesome.0 -
I've fill online formSA1 form for self assessment 2 weeks ago. Received email from HMRC saying
"You should receive a letter from us within approximately 10 days which will confirm your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)."
but in 10 days I will miss the deadline of Jan 31, what can I do?0 -
Have a look at the link on the HMRC website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk there are a few ways the deadline can be extended, one of which is if they sent you the letter after 31 Oct, so as they sent the letter in November you might have a later deadline if that was the first letter they sent. Does it say on the letter?0

Thanks zagfles. I did receive my code today, going to file my return as soon as possible.0 -
This is going endless. I got my UTR and registered online but will have to wait another 7 days for the activation code before I can file my return and tomorrow is the last day to file my return. I am gutted.0
