I remember the before 9.00am post and about 1.00pm post and early post on a saturday and sunday posting running up to christmas.

Now I am lucky if I see postie before 1.00pm. Still, he's a lovely chap and puts bulky items in our agreed place. When I spoke to him just before Christmas he reckons that eventually our daily delivery will stop and you will collect it from a designated place but it will need a Act of Parliament to let this happen.

  • I remember when I still lived with my parents (up until 2007) we had the same postman for years, pretty much through all my childhood onwards. He was local so we'd often see him round the parade of shops when he wasn't working. It was great because if something had a slightly wrong address on it (say a 12 instead of a 2) he's know who it was for by the name. He was a really friendly chap.

In our flat we rarely have the same postamn for more than a couple of weeks. We have the van turn up between 9-10am if we have any large items, and the normal post about 2pm. I am sure they are saving stuff up though because I'll have nothing for days and then it'll all come at once, regardless of when it was posted.

Just before Christmas I had 4 things go missing, all of which should have been delivered around the same time. I called RM and they said they couldn't do anything, the sender had to report it. Fine, but that's no good if the problem is at my end, which it would seem to be.

I always had two deliveries a day when I lived in London in the 80s, and this continued where ever I lived in the country until the service was axed.

We have had the same postman for about 5 years now, even his substitute is a regular. They do come later but now have to carry/deliver the small parcels as well as letters so the round takes longer and the trolley is heavier (and we live in a hilly area).

I remember it too, when I lived on the mainland. I live on an island now and we get our one post a day any time between 12 and 3pm! When I lived in Glasgow my post came about 7am, and also at home when I was wee it came then too, plus a second post.

My friend collects Victorian postcards. The post was so reliable that the messages on the back say things like "Dear Mum, I'll be home this evening so can you cook me some kippers for tea" - posted in the morning and delivered in time for Mum to cook his favourite meal.

Oh My, now that was service, almost as quick as a text.

I can remember post being delivered virtually all day! the last one being at about 3 or 4 in the afternoon! I still find only one delivery a day a bit annoying! at least in the past, if it didn't arrive in the morning there was every chance it would arrive after lunch!

but if there's no mail left in the delivery office, what would the 2nd delivery bring?
  • Our post sometimes does not come until 16:00 most days. Not much good if you are waiting for something. However, I understand what another poster has said about the postmen being changed regularly, we have one postman does our roads after he does the "townies" post. Sometimes his run in the town takes longer and it is random postal workers who deliver so the mail goes to all the different houses on the road. Meaning that sometimes the mail does not turn up as people bin it rather than be neighbourly, that is of course not always the case as it on occasion turns up OPENED and shoved in our letter box lol

    When we lived in a village deliveries were 8am and 4pm. Moved to a town...now it`s 1pm!
