Use Google Maps to plan your walks.

That way you may never need the Metro.

It's a fabulous city to walk around ... if it's not too icy.

Why would you need a 7 day pass if you're only going for 3 days?
We walked everywhere in NYC but do wrap up warm at this time of year. We took th Staten Island Ferry and saw the statue for free, take photot on outbound trip for a better view.
The metro card won't take you back to JFK I don't think.

Most the touristic things are in mid town Manhattan other than the Statue f Liberty (and 9/11 site and the Brooklyn Bridge if your interested in them) which is at the south of the island and about a 90 minute walk. Realistically youd only need one return ticket and youd be done.

Single Trip travel insurance covers you from when you buy it until the end of your trip. It excludes anything that happens or can reasonably predict before you buy it. You therefore get the best value by buying it as soon as you book as it covers any weather, illness that prevents you travelling etc. Given the costs of medical treatment in the US certainly still get it but be aware you are unlikely to be covered for weather related cancellation as you already know the state of the weather there now

The Metro card will take you back to JFK. Depending on where you are staying there are two ways, but the usal one is to take the express E line to Sutphin Boulevard (one standard subway fare) and then the air train ($5 which can also be paid by metro ticket). Allternatively, pay for a limo through Carmel ($4 off coupon on free booklet from tourist office in Times Square on 46th St and Broadway).

and here for air train http://www.mta.info/mta/airtrain.htm

Staten Island Ferry is the best free ride in town, anywhere. Great views both ways. Don't waste your time queuing to get on to Statue of Liberty but go to Ellis Island instead, or just take in views from SIFerry.

We used the metro a fair bit when we were there and the weather was freezing as it was warmer to get around!

Plenty of reasonable priced hotel rooms.
Try Hyatt place hotel 36th street 5 minutes from ESB.
2 nights Friday thru Sunday for less than £200 with city view king bed and 24 hour cancellation option in case you don't fly.
Weather will turn for the better by weekend.
Get on grey Line bus buying a 3 day pass and use it is a taxi also.
See everything and hop on hop off.

Taxis are a great way of getting round. Last March I was there and used them vastly more than the subway. Also it's a $45 flat fare from Manhattan to JFK which is much more pleasant than the really really long subway ride which doesn't even get you there.

The LIRR train from Penn station is much quicker than the subway to link to the Sky Train at Jamaica.

You learn something new everyday, I didn't know the SkyTrain went there. That's a good option if you're alone but if you're a couple then I still think splitting a cab fare is good value, plus they take you to the correct terminal.

Great tip though mate, I'm better off knowing about that.
