New York and Insurance

Hi

Happy New Year!

Me and my husband are going to New York this weekend for 3 days for our anniversay. Well hope we go as airports are closed and very bad wather over there.

This is our 1st trip there and are just hoping to see the a couple of main sights (Staute of Liberty, Central Park, Empire state etc) and just wander about shopping, sight seeing etc.

We fly to Newark but the return flight is from JFK. I have checked on info for the New York Metro at varous websites and am a little confused, as I right you can only buy 1 day or 7 days metro cards? (an not 2 or 3 day) OR purchase single entry tickets?

For our trip please can someone decide what will be best and easiest?

Additionally this was not part of a package, I booked the flights and will book the hotel very soon. Regarding travel insurance, should I just book the best one available and look at the small print etc? sorry if this is a silly question, just making sure with all the bad weather etc.

Thanks

Oh dear, if you haven't booked your holiday insurance yet it's highly likely you won't now be covered for anything relating to the bad weather they are having.

Why didn't you book insurance as soon as you booked the trip? What would you have done if you'd have needed to cancel due to ill health etc.?

Always insure prior to booking or at the same time as booking.

With the bad weather many hotels are full of people stranded there, have you really not booked the hotel yet for this weekend? The weather is at least forecast to get better from a cold 2 degrees on Thursday to the relative warmth of 9 over the weekend itself but as others have said no insurer would cover you now for cancellation, luckily it looks as though you should be OK apart from the cost of the hotel
  • Damn it...we dont go away lot therefore just did not think I should book insurance at the same time or before.

I guess I should book insurance anyway?

I will also make sure I book the hotel today.

We only booked the fligth tickets in the 27th Dec, I know no excuse now but all been a bit of a rush.

Have you applied for your ESTA?

Yes, you will still need to book insurance, you many not be covered for weather delays now but you'll still need it for health, baggage, personal possessions etc. Make sure you get good medical cover for the US.

You're not the only one to make the mistake of not getting insurance as soon as you book, but at least you'll know for future hols., as soon ans you've parted with money, get insurance!

I know you only booked week or so ago, but sometimes holidays are booked months in advance, anything can happen during those months that could mean you have to cancel, without insurance you risk losing everything you've paid out.

And it doesn't cost any more whether you take the policy out 6 months or 6 days before you go.

    Enjoy NYC!

Absolutely. Medical costs are high in the States. Make sure you have full health cover.

I'd be quite concerned that you don't have a hotel -when are you intending to book that ?

EDIT OK I see you're booking the hotel today....... try https://www.kayak.co.uk or alternatively https://www.hotwire.com may be useful.

  • ESTA- yes all that got confirmed a couple of days ago.

Thanks for the links and will book today.

Anybody who has been part some knowledge on the Metro usuage for 3 days. As we do not know our way around, even for places that may be walking distance. Should we get a 7 day pass?

    thanks

You can just buy a 'pay as you ride' Metrocard. If you have ever used a PAYG Oyster card in London, the scheme is similar.

Most people buy a $10 dollar card (which covers $9.00 credit, a $0.50 credit bonus and the $1 fee for the card). Each ride is (I think) $2.50 regardless of distance.

As your credit dries up, you can top up your Metrocard at any of the ticket terminals or staffed booths with any value of credit you like. Keep hold of the card itself, otherwise, you will have to pay $1 for a card each time.

New York is a very easy city to walk around and if, like a lot of tourists, you're spending most of your time in Midtown Manhattan, you'll rarely use the subway system.
