virgin PAYG: £2 min credit

hi guys,
I've just tried to use my mobile phone to text my mum and had a text back from virgin saying i didn't have enough credit, i checked my balance it says i had over a pound.
i then rang them up the lady on the phone then checked my details and the answer she gave was i have to have a minimum of £2 to make any calls or texts.
since when can they pick what i can spend my money/credit on, has anyone else run into this?
